Grand Theft Auto 3 vs. Vice City

Hi All,

It’s time for me to start thinking about Christmas presents. I’ve been pinballing between GTA3 and GTA:Vice City for the PC. I’ve never played either of these games. They’re the same price. Calling all gamers: what’s the right choice?

That’s a tough one. Why not get both? Personally I liked GTAIII the best for the story line, etc. However, in Vice City you get ride some pretty cool motorcycles, plus fly a helicopter and that is mucho fun!

I don’t think you’ll go wrong either way. They both play about the same, just go with whatever seems more interesting to you.

E3

GTA3 has a lot less to do than Vice City, can’t ride bikes, fly helicopters, less weapons, smaller (I think) gaming area.

Which means if you get Vice City then afterwards GTA3, the latter will seem far less involved.
Buy GTA3 then if you like it buy Vice City - they are both truly brilliant games.

I could swear I have saw advertising recently that these games are now packaged together. If I were you I’d check into it.

Vice City is a better game. They updated a lot of the playability things (like motorcycles) from the previous and the soundtrack is something that you will likely be able to sing along with. .

Never played the PC versions but have played both on the PS2.

I’d go with GTA:VC as it looks better and has the better gameplay.

Both are great titles though.

Ok so I am not crazy. You can buy them bundled together for a great price but Circuit City only has it for PS2 and XBox. You should see if the PC bundle version is, or will be, available. If it will be I’d wait it out. If not I say go with Vice City.

They’ve bundled them together. I recommend getting that bundle. Play GTA3 first, then VC. They are both exceptional games, and time well wasted.

I’ve got both, and Vice City is definitely the best.

Other differences are that in VC you can shoot out tires on cars and shoot people’s heads off as they sit in their cars. There’s also a ton of more stuff to do, like compete in races at the dome, lots of different checkpoint races on bikes, in helicopters, a truck, RC cars, etc. You can fly an airplane that actually flies (not the one with the stubby wings you get in GTA III).

Definately Vice City for the reasons that TaxGuy gave. While we’re here I’ve got a question for those who might know a bit about game development:

Why did they make the movement on foot so clunky? It doesn’t flow like a typical FPS/TPS (not that GTA is an F/TPS) . The animation is also very odd - his upper body stays still while his legs rotate when you change directions. It sort of kills the shooting aspect for me.

GTAIII has a fine story and missions, but the graphics can get laggy and frustrating on the PC. Vice City ran far better for me on the same machine. Given that it has a few more features, it wins out.

Back when it came out, GTA 3 on PC was a piece of crap compared to the PS2 version and required much hardware. OTOH Vice City was considered comparable to the PS2 and ran much better on most people’s hardware. I must admit I don’t know how the obligatory patches have changed that in the time since though.

Thanks guys,

Doesn’t look like the bundle is offered in my neck of the woods, so Vice City it is.

Definitely play GTA3 and then VC. They’re both worth playing, but you’ll be disappointed if you do it backwards.

Personally, I like the radio in the first one better, because the reggae and techno stations totally rock out but 80s music sucks (except for a couple songs).

But as far as vehicles go, I can’t decide if I have more fun in the Hunter helicopter or the PCJ-600 motorcycle, both from the second game.

GTA3 for sure. Better music and radio(for sure), better city, better atmosphere. Vice City took a turn for the cartoonish. The graphics on Vice City are better I suppose, but I can’t really tell the difference.

:dubious:

Yeah, GTA3 required decent hardware for the time it came out, but not any moreso than other high-end games.

I bought GTA3 the day it was released. I was (and am) using a GeForce3 Ti200 video card, which was a sub-$100 card at the time. It always ran great for me. I know there was a patch released to address a few issues that some people had, but I never needed it.

After that, I didn’t even want to play GTA3 on my friend’s PS2 because it was so blurry compared to the sharp, high-resolution images of the PC version. Also, the keyboard/mouse combo is more accurate and easier to use than the PS2 gamepad.

Both games are better than their console counterparts in that you can listen to your own MP3s instead of the provided radio stations. The ability to mod is another plus. Don’t like a gang car? No problem. Replace it with a Porsche or a Lamborghini that looks and drives like a dream, and is more detailed than any of the in-game cars. Replace the Army helicopter with a Harrier jet, or the flatbed truck with a Batmobile. You can download cars others have created or design your own. There are even map modifications, including stunt parks with ramps and loops.

There are also other neat little hacks you can do, like modifying the menu screen so you can save your game anywhere (except inside a vehicle or building, or while on a mission) instead of just the designated save points. That one is pretty useful, but you can also do goofy stuff like making the golf cart or the tank the fastest car in the game.
