Guess the famous person, then add another

Outstanding:

want2know – Andy Large - **Andy Pettite ** (knew it last night, forgot to submit it).

Zeldar, looks like you’re all covered.

“Thought is the labor of the intellect, reverie is its pleasure.”

I was asking for new clues, not just confirmation that I didn’t have the answers yet. If we’re to wait until these dawn on me, the thread is likely to be long gone by then and it seems there are only three or four of us even checking in. Even Sternvogel with all his help has been random in appearance.

ETA: I see you must have meant my outstanding ones are all counted for. I thought you were saying: “No more clues, Loser.”

I went and googled Arden and got a comic named Myrin (new to me) and that looks like a close fit with Marine, so I’ll go with that.

I never heard of Rupert Grint before googling, either. And Grint resembles Grind, so there’s my shot at that one.

Like I said, my clues might be too clever for their (and your) own good.

You got it! From MadTV and, yes, I was surprised it was pronounced “Marine” too.

You got this one too. Rupert plays Harry Potter’s best friend, Ron Weasley in, well. Harry Potter. Grint is an Old English variant of “grindeth,” hence my previous clue “In the old days, I’d say this one weareth you down.”

I’ll leave my new clues as they are.

Just for the hell of it, and maybe for the benefit of newcomers to the thread, and so the ones of us who’ve been playing all along can check for unsolved (and any I may have missed or duplicated) names, here, in order, are what was here at 8:48 AM, Friday.

===============================

An impressive list, if I do say so.

In case this has run its course, thanks for making this a great way to kill a day or two.

Okay, I got two of the previously unsolved ones:

Michael Jordan
Mike Wallace (Wallis Warfield Simpson was the divorcée who inspired King Edward VIII’s decision to abdicate the throne for “the woman I love”)

I was thinking of clues, but hesitated to post them with so many outstanding (in both senses of the word). Here are a few:

Johnny Pines
Amy Portsenate
Ed Dirtytruck
Ralph Zenith
Jack JerseyShoreTourist (this requires some knowledge of slang)
Paul Setter
Amy Deny
Jimmy Drayman
Earl Conjunctions
Arnold Pilgrim

And although they’re not celebrities, two people in my life were actually given this treatment. See if you can guess their last names:

David Side
Lillian Leg-en-bass (the hyphens aren’t in the actual name, and the “en” particle will be unchanged – think of possible substitutes for “leg” and “bass”)

Thanks for some real zingers, Sternvogel.

Ralph Zenith = Ralph Nader is all I can get without more head-scratching.

Nice work on Jordan! And I’m pretty sure all my hair would be white before I made the Wallace connection.

I am no good at all with cryptic crosswords so those clues that go through several levels stump me after the first or second one. And if I have never heard of the person, that makes it even harder.

Just letting you folks know I’m still sweating over the ones with no answers and not just ignoring the thread.

Thoughts so far:

Pines could be some other tree or a sub for longs or yearns or shorts
Portsenate could have the port for left or the wine or the place you dock a ship and senate could be congress or house — WINEHOUSE?
Dirtytruck could be soil van or grimy lorry or muddy jeep

Setter could be pointer or spaniel or pitbull
I’ll be back!

Earl Butz!!! A man ahead of his time!

Jimmy Drayman = Jimmy Carter

Good gets, guy!

Still outstanding (with clues):
Gloria Champion - Haven’t you ever acted as guardian to something or someone.
Don SpiffApple - This just a simple polishing Job.
Jordan Shavings - peelings, peels or pickings - It’s comedic, what the layers will reveal.
Garry Bountyhunter - Even with the correction, any LEO will do.
Woodie Passerine - This particular type of bird (though not a parrot) is now associated with dirty talk.
Foodkeeper Admiral - Nimitz was not the only name associated with football.

Well, since they’re not famous I’m going to hand you a list in each case.

Side – front back rear lateral ventricle edge angle border rim face main (as dish)
Leg – arm thigh knee toe foot elbow tenticle
Bass – Soprano alto cello guitar drum piano trout bream barracuda shark

Anything close in any of these?

Johnny Bench?

Jack Benny.

Three more tries here:

Jack Benny
Paul Reiser
Amy Grant

New ones:

Eddie Amble.
Ed AppleGuys.
Joan Stomachcrosswater.
Phyllis Cardplayer.
Derek Tothrow.
Abednego Seamstress.
Couch Bedsmoother.

All of my celebrities have been solved correctly, with the exceptions of Ed Dirtytruck (although Zeldar came very close to getting it – think of “dirty” as a verb and the solution should appear) and Arnold Pilgrim.

My college roommate was David Edge. He had a Frisbee on which he had written his surname on the rim, so I jokingly asked him if he needed a reminder of where to grip the disc when someone told him to “grab it by the edge”.

Good thinking of both pronunciations of “bass” – in Lillian’s case, it was the short-a fish. Her last name was Armentrout.

I’ve got two of these, I think:

Joan Crawford
Phyllis Diller

Is Abednego Daniel (I can’t think of a single Meshach or Shadrach)?

Is there an Eddie Walker or Eddie Trott?

Is there a Sol (soil) van?

Okay, Sternvogel, after a names search at IMDB I found a couple of contenders for

Arnold Pilgrim

One is a true stretch but if you take “staying” as sort of an antonym for “pilgrim” as in somebody “staying home” then

Arnold Stang

would fill out the stretch pretty well. At least I have heard of him, dead for decades though he could be. ETA: IMDB says he’s still alive and did something in 2002. WIBD

The other guess is

Arnold Rovers

which is 100% guess. At least it fits the requirements, eh?
