I’d say that Mario Kart Wii will surpass most of the numbers I’ve seen here and approach Super Smash Brothers Brawl numbers. It’s a more accessible game which will appeal to a wider audience beyond that of the more hardcore Smash Brothers fanbase.
I think that GTAIV will do just fine, easily surpassing Mario Kart, but I’m not convinced it can do so well in sales. San Andreas sold like 4 million copies in its first year, and that was on the most popular game system around, probably ever. The PS3 and the 360 combined have only sold about 20 million units, so I’m not convinced that GTAiV can pull down as many sales as GTA:SA did.
Can’t really guess though, I haven’t seen any presale numbers for GTAIV, so I could be way, way off.
So, anyone get any final figures? I couldn’t find much for Mario Kart, but I see something like 609000 units of Grand Theft Auto pushed in the first day.
Not a problem there; people were throwing around some insanely crazy numbers on that for a while like the analysts who figured more than 50% of PS3 and XBox 360 owners would buy it in the first week are a good example. I know the game is going to have a huge attach rate but not that huge.
Of course for me all that means is that a year from now it’ll be selling for $5 used since everyone who wants it has it and all those people are trying to sell it back.
I am actually surprised that GTA IV does not have more celebrities involved in it. The others from III - San Andreas had some big voice talent playing the characters. I am not seeing any names I recognize in this one except as DJs (go Iggy!). At least they still have Lazlo.
