Guess the Song

Having stumped the panel once, I’ll try for twice:

[ul]You are my sunshine, I pull the drapes shut tight.
It’s curtains for you, goodbye.
The cat’s in the bag, the bag’s in the river,
The river makes me cry.

Your hands, my heart, what’s so hard about that?
Nothin 'cept I can’t be your wife.
I loved that boy till death do us part,
Till the evening I took his life. [/ul]

Not that anyone cares, but the answer to my earlier ones are:

  1. Beatles – I am the Walrus (got by astorian)

“Expert, texpert, choking smokers
Don’t you think the Joker laughs at you?
See how they run like pigs from a gun
See how they snide
I’m crying”

  1. Eagles – The Last Resort (nailed by mojo jojo)

“The rich men came and raped the land
Nobody caught 'em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes
And Jesus-people bought 'em
They called it Paradise”

  1. Billy Joel – Goodnight Saigon (deduced by astorian)

“Remember Charlie? Remember Baker?
They left their childhood, on every acre
And who was wrong? And who was right?
It didn’t matter in the thick of the fight”

  1. Black Grape – Heroes (guessed by mattk)

“Jesus was a black man, no… Jesus was Batman
no no no no… that was Bruce Wayne
Who’s got the biggest
Who’s got the biggest
Who’s got the biggest brain?”

  1. Camper Van Beethoven – Take the Skinheads Bowling

Would have thought you punk fans might have got this one.

  1. Steel Eye Spam – The Weaver and the Factory Maid

This one is fairly obscure.

  1. Polka Dot Door, theme song

This is a childrens show that ran in Ontario, possibly all of Canada. Not exactly general knowledge.

  1. Meaning of Life, theme song (ascertained by astorian)

  2. Tom Waits – “What’s he building in there?”

This is off his new CD Mule Variations. Its OK. It certainly isn’t as good as Swordfishtrombones or Raindogs.

  1. Spitting Image – “I’ve never met a nice South African”
    (blindly stabbed by mattk)

I saw this Spitting Image years ago and have no reason why this song stuck in my head. Well guessed!

Most of these lyrics came from songs released in the 80s. I’ll post the answers tomorrow night.

Patty

  1. You want my reply…
    What was the question?
I was looking at (song title)

  2. I wish I was in Tijuana
    Eating barbecued iguana.

  3. I might like you better
    If we slept together.

  4. Dry up all your tears my love,
And put on your new face.
You can never win or lose if
    You don’t run the race.

  5. We ain’t going to the party
We ain’t going to the game
We ain’t going to the disco
    Ain’t gonna cruise down Main
    We’re (song title)

  6. They put their money in a trunk
And bought a lot of worthless junk.
And now they’re back where they began.
Digging through the trash for cans.

  7. I feel so extraordinary.
Something’s got a hold of me.

  8. You don’t have to be beautiful
    To turn me on

  9. Sometimes you picture me.
    I’m walking to far ahead.
    You’re calling to me
I can’t hear what you said.

  10. Just a dollar to get in
    And twenty-five cents a beer.

  1. “Kiss”, Prince
  2. “Time After Time”, Cyndi Lauper

Wow only one guess at mine…(a correct guess though BTW). I thought #'s 1 and 2 were almost too easy but no one even attempted them. I’m still %99.999 sure that no one will get #4 but here’s a hint: the band is on skunk records.

  1. I wish I was in Tijuana
    Eating barbecued iguana.
    Mexican Radio** Wall of Voodoo**

         3. I might like you better
         If we slept together.

Never Say Never Romeo Void (song was easy, had to cheat on the band name)

        4. Dry up all your tears my love,
And put on your new face.
You can never win or lose if
        You don't run the race.

Love My Way The Psychadelic Furs

                7. I feel so extraordinary.
Something's got a hold of me.

True Faith** New Order**

“Mexican Radio” by Wall of Voodoo.

OK, I got one for ya. One liner, tho…

“I can lose myself in Chinese art and American girls…”

Fairly easy.

And another…

“Is it worth it
A new winter coat and shoes for the wife
And a bicycle on the boy’s birthday
It’s just a rumor that was spread around town…”

Easy ones.

“Is it worth it
A new winter coat and shoes for the wife
And a bicycle on the boy’s birthday
It’s just a rumor that was spread around town…” Shipbuilding** Elvis Costello**

try this:
“ice-cream, 'scuse me
I seen you looking good the other evening”

I think this is the only one on the list that wasn’t answered- The Germs, Lexicon Devil

Here’s one I haven’t thought about in years, till it came up in conversation last night (don’t ask).

“What is there to do she said
He said come on baby I’ll show you a good time
So they went down to one of those cheap motels
And they got all gooshy and wet.”

Now move 6000 miles to the right…

“We ain’t got nothing but they don’t even care
They don’t even know y’know
They just want money, we can take it or leave it
What we need is…”

I might as well throw in a few…

  1. I’m so scared in case I fall off my chair
And I’m wondering how I’ll get down the stairs

  2. These are the days of miracles and wonders,
And don’t cry, baby, don’t cry.

  3. Some came to sing
    Some came to pray
    Some came to keep
    The Dark away.

  4. Bonedigger Bonedigger
    Dogs in the moonlight
    Far away my well-lit door
    Mr. Beerbelly Beerbelly
Get these mutts away from me
You know I don’t find this stuff amusing anymore

  5. But whatever road you choose,
I’m right behind you win or lose

  6. If it’s something I want, then it’s something I need;
I wasn’t built for comfort, I was built for speed.

  7. This shattered dream you cannot justify.
We’re gonna scream until we’re satisified.

  8. Well, you’re an untamed youth
    That’s the truth
With your cloak full of eagles

  9. I don’t really know her, I only know her name
But she crawls under your skin, you’re never quite the same

  10. Her weapons were her crystal eyes
    Making every man a man
Black as the dark night she was
    Got what no-one else had

  11. Well morning comes and you’re still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone

  12. Love of two is one
    Here but now they’re gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn’t go on

  13. I wanna publish 'zines,
    And rage against machines,
    I wanna pierce my tongue,
It doesn’t hurt it feels fine

  14. Up where the mountains meet the heavens above
Out where the lightning splits the sea
I would swear that there’s someone somewhere
    Watching me

  15. Sweet 16 ain’t that peachy keen,
No, it ain’t so neat to admit defeat

Some of those should be gimmes, but the rest ought to be a little harder…

– Bob

I’m afraid that all the songs I knew have already been identified, but here’s a snippet from a song I know you all know:

Go wild.

My contributions (punk stuff)

  1. Don’t you know you’ll never come clean. You know it’s true…

  2. There are doubts, regarding your abilities. to lead them, the men. to lead them…

  3. Don’t know how to read but i’ve got a lot of toys. Daddy’s a lazy middle class intellectual, mommy’s on valium so ineffectual…

  4. …I can’t cross her from my memory. She meant everything to me, she meant every word she said.

and the fin de resistance;
5. No safety comes in your numbers nothing so ordained…

These are all from pretty old songs.

More punk, but newer…

  1. mom and dad don’t look so hot these days, they’re getting over the hill

  2. Friday night we’ll, be drinking Maneschevitz (sp?), goin’ out to - terrorize Goyem

  3. We went to the philly pizza company and ordered some hot tea, the waitress said well, no - we only have it iced, so we jumped up on the table and shouted anarchy, and someone played a beach boys song on the jukebox. it was california dreamin’ and someone started screamin’ on such a winter’s daaay!

If you want harder punk songs just ask
broccoli!

#3 is “21st Century Digital Boy” by Bad Religion.

Mine previous effort was largely ignored, but it was fairly obscure anyways. It was “Rejected” by Rancid.

Anyway’s here’s another half-punk one:

Hell, for a super-fun lyric to identify, try my signature.

Yes on 21 st century digital boy.

And yours is Song number one by fugazi.

Brocolli!'s songs that i can guess are

  1. Were the Brews - NOFX
  2. Punk rock girl - Dead milkmen

Come one Broc… no stabs at mine?

OK, BobShroeck, you’re going to make me embarrass myself here.

#14 is “holding out for a hero”

6 is “bad for good” by Jim Steinman

to make me feel a little better:

4 is “Call me Al” by Paul Simon

Too many unanswered hanging around to post another one.

No, can’t resist:

“inhale, exhale, just got a ounce in the mail”

#1 is “Stuck in the Middle With You” by Stealers Wheel

#2 is “Boy in the Bubble”, also by Paul Simon

#12 is “Don’t Fear the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult (man, that takes me back…)

#7 sounds like a KMFDM lyric, but I can’t place it (Juke Joint Jezebel, maybe?), and #11 is annoyingly familiar but eluding me thus far…

  1. I don’t Like Mondays- Sir Bob Geldolf and the Boomtown Rats

  2. is Stuck in the Middle with You but i don’t know who that’s by.
    Re: more punk rock:

Ahem…I left some new punk rock that got stuck on the end of the last page where nobody will ever see it.

Of course I don’t know any of the other new ones…wait let me think…

Damn damn damn.

Cannot believe i didn’t spot “stuck in the middle”.

The needle in my head will now stick on that tune for days.
