I’ve struggled a bit with that whole “Did ya deploy?” aspect of veteran status. Intellectually I’ve come to accept that deployment is not necessary to be a vet, but still… And then our boy drops that turd and I was like, “Hey now! I did my bit and carved out a chunk of my life–don’t be taking that label away from me!”

Remembrance Day here in Canada. I spent it with thousands of others at the National War Memorial for the annual ceremony. No special sales here, and the stores aren’t even allowed to open until 12:30, after the ceremonies are over.

If you were in the military, you’re a military veteran. If you were in combat, you are a combat veteran. If you were in the Navy, you’re a Navy veteran. If you played pro football, you’re an NFL veteran. If you play a lot of laser tag, you’re a laser tag veteran. I don’t understand why this is so hard for people to understand.

I go to a bar that gives veterans their first beer for free. I try to get there early enough to pay for their second. Others have copied me over the years. The end result is that they can drink as much as they want without spending any money.

I wish I could do something like that, but I live in an area where everyone’s a veteran. We’d all be broke.
