Guilty Pleasures: Movies you like but are/were widely panned as a bad movie

He might have been a little shaggy in that flick, but I wouldn’t call Robert Foxworth a bear.

I couldn’t disagree more.

In the first place, changing the title from Eaters of the Dead – which sounds like a zombie flick, not a Beowulf film – to The 13th Warrior clearly gives a better idea of what the film is about (and makes you wonder why the 13th part is important). The film didn’t remove anything relevant to the Beowulf story (it doesn’t have the dwarves in it, but that’s not part of Beowulf). The indications and the stakes seemed perfectly clear to me. The film didn’t emphasize the relationship to Beowulf, but neither does the book (except in that overblown afterword). A great flick, and one of the better beowulf-inspired movies to come out of that Beowulf-saturated period.

Peter Cushing’s two Doctor Who movies.

I liked that one too.
