Guitar Recording Question

Hi i am in a death metal band, and we are going into the studio in july. I need any tips you may have for getting a great guitar sound(mike position, volume, adjustments to live sound, ect). I am no stranger to the studio but i can never get a guitar sound im happy with. My ideal sound is very deep, presant, and tight, with lots of clarity. Lots of bass, but not so much that highs are overwhelmed.

i use a guitar with EMG 81 pickups, a Marshall JCM 2000 head, marshall 1960 cabs, and a 32 band EQ. My live sound is great but i can never get it to transfer to tape, and have it sound like it does live.

Any tips or techniques you may have are VERY appreciated.
THANX ALOT!!!

It’s a long time since my live sound and recording days, but I’m a bit baffled. If you like the sound coming out of the 1960’s you will reproduce it exactly if you use good gear and don’t play with the EQ on the mixing deck.

Two things I tried with some success -

As well as the mic right on the speaker, try a shotgun to capture the air movement. Works real good on rack toms for a nice fat tone.

You can increase the presence of just about anything with a little kick at 7K, particularly vocals.

Keep on rockin’…er dyin’…whatever.
