Gumby and Pokey

I loved them as a kid. And still do. How about you?

Count me in as a Gumby & Pokey fan as a kid. Haven’t seen it in years though so can’t comment on whether I would like watching it.

Well, 4thMonkey, you should see what Gumby can do today. He can walk into any book with his pony-pal Pokey too.

I just visited the “official” Gumby website at http://www.gumbyworld.com/ because I could only remember Gumby and Pokey but none of the other characters. I recognise all of them except the robot.

Interesting how much you can forget about.

How long were the episodes? In Australia I think Gumby was shown on the ABC which is a government TV station with no advertisements and Gumby was used as filler material between shows to make up the time that ads would normally take overseas.

Dammit!

He was once a little green slab of clay…
(GUMBY!)

At gumbyworld ther are episodes in all their glory for your viewing pleasure. Watchout for those Blockheads though.

When I was a boy, I named the smaller of my two teddy bears “Poky”, either because of Gumby’s Pokey, or the book Pokey Little Pup. (The larger teddy bear was named Alice in honor of Alice Kramden, I kid you not.)

Last I saw 'em, they were in some movie with Arnold Schwartzenegger and that Miss America porno chick.

I’ve only seen the robot in one episode; it was shown as a short on Mystery Science Theater 3000. The episode ended with the robot’s head mounted to the side of a building, resulting in much blubbering from Crow and Servo.

I loved it when I was little. Recently I rented a DVD of the first season of Gumby from Netflix, though, and it was HELLA TRIPPY. Seriously, if I didn’t know better (the same guy did those Lutheran claymations with the kid and his dog), I’d think he was seriously tripping out.

Does ANYONE know the Gumby episode in which Prickle, the yellow dinosaur, suddenly grew a horn and said in a very matter-of-fact way, “Hey, it’s a horn”?

That line has been a catch-phrase with my family ever since the mid-'80s, when we bought our first VCR and a Gumby episode collection was one of the first videos we ever rented. Often, whenever something unexpected happens, we just shrug and say “Hey, it’s a horn” in the Prickle voice. Stupid, I know, but it cracks me up just thinking about it.
