I’m 20 and haven’t gotten my hair cut for nearly 2 years (aside from the occasional trim.)
I have no idea why I decided to let my hair grow long. I just thought it would be different (I’d always had the exact same hair cut as long as I could remember.) I’m keeping my hair long for now because I like it this way and think it looks fairly good.
At the moment, in fact, & for several years a previous time.
I just stopped cutting at 18, then started cutting it myself in my mid-late twenties. Then, I shaved my head 21 months ago & have grown it out from there.
Strong cultural identification with a romanticised counterculture, & frankly, curiosity to see if I could get it to my feet.
When I cut it the first time after several years, it was due to a sense that I’d probably reached maximum length, & also that I’d kind of like to have shorter hair. When I cut it much shorter, it was partly a reaction to my mom losing hair to radiation treatment. I figured I might as well enjoy having thick short hair while I was young, but I missed my long hair, & so have gone back.
I cut it when I was 18 just before joining the USAF. You really don’t want to go into basic with long hair. It just gives the TI’s ammo for the next 6 wks.
I’ve kept my hair short since then because it really looks much better on me. Looking back on old pictures, I think it was the main reason I didn’t get much dates in highschool.
Laziness, rebellion, and the fact that I thought it made me look cool.
It got cut a lot shorter when I started teaching. Then, 5 years ago, I lost a bet with the students about how well they would do on the state testing that year. I’ve shaved my head ever since.
1) Do you or have you ever worn your hair long?
Yes
2) What age are or were you at the time?
Roughly, ages 15 - 19
3) What made you decide to grow your hair out?
Mostly, because I figured chicks dig long hair. I’m pretty sure that was my primary motivation for everything I did between ages 15 & 19.
**4) If you you used to have long hair and now don’t, what was your motivation for getting it cut?**At 19 I joined the military. They don’t give you a lot of choice re: hairstyles. After that, I became the victim of male pattern baldness. So, my long-haired days are behind me forever. Though I do occasionally ponder that most-stylish of hairdo’s - the combover

When I was in college, my middle years or so, I let it grow pretty long, to my shoulders, I guess.

19-21

I don’t think there really was a reason.

I was trying to get a co-op /intership job before I finished school so I got it cut.
Longer than male average since 1977. I could play a Haight-Ashbury hippie or Jesus of Nazareth (as conventionally painted, that is) with no hairpiece.
Start age: 18; Now: 47
a) I like the way it looks
b) I like the way it feels
c) As cultural/social shorthand, presenting myself as a longhaired guy (maybe “musician”, maybe “computer-tech wizard”, maybe “hippie”, probably not “accountant”, most likely not “sales rep”) is useful as a self-selected stereotype to pigeonhole myself in for first-impression purposes
I had long to the shoulder hair starting my teens.
After about 30 it went down to my shoulder blades at times.
Now I trim it at three inches maybe, because when I got ill I couldn’t handle the up keep on anything longer than 2 inches. It was quickly falling out also, and lots of it turned white. Now it grows slow and is darker than before, because it must still produce as much color with less growth.
I cut it off the last time at about 40. I let it grow out at least three times to the long length, because it was full and naturaly curly, so a bit of conditioner in the morning and I had tight curled hair until I combed it out. I went to the extreme lengths because of two women with butch cuts an inch high and tightly permed that didn’t like my hair at shoulder length. Most of the women I met liked it, as did I.
1) Do you or have you ever worn your hair long?
Yes, at one time in my life I had long hair.
2) What age are or were you at the time?
From 19-27.
3) What made you decide to grow your hair out?
Lots of reasons - I had just moved to Germany and I didn’t know anybody, a haircut would have involved going to a German hair salon, I had always wanted long hair but hated that transition phase when the hair is too short to pull back but too long brush into any kind of style. It seemed like a good time.
4**) If you you used to have long hair and now don’t, what was your motivation for getting it cut?**
One fateful day, I discovered a small bald spot where there had previously been hair. I wore my hair pulled back in a ponytail for a couple of weeks (with the longer front hair pulled strategically over The Spot). I then reasoned that this was the functional equivalent of a comb-over. I then hacked everything off to ear-length which looked horrible. The next day I buzzed it down to nothing and started shaving…that was nine years ago.
I used to have long, bellybutton long, oops fell into the toilet long hair. I cut it abruptly when…
After riding in a brand new convertible, hair blowing in the wind, having to cut out the tangles or accept having Rastafari hair.
Having to buy dozens of hair products to make it look decent: Hair dye, real shampoo and conditioners, paying more at the barber for having “extra long hair”
Waking up one morning with a neck ache because I accidentally sleep on my hair as it was rolled up in a bun to prevent bed hair.
I wanted to look like Bono (where’s that LMAO smilie when you need it? )
I didn’t actually look anything like Bono.
I actually decided to change my hairstyle recently - nearing the age of 40, all this hair on my head kept making me look like a kid so I whacked it off by taking 1/2-inch shears to it and then trimmed the rest to make it even.
I’ve seen an old hippie guy that had a few rope patches still a couple feet long. Like something you see on a horror movies when they open a casket, and most of the hair has dropped off leaving a few rope strands. He needed to shave his head badly, as it looked severly manged.
1) Do you or have you ever worn your hair long? Yes
2) What age are or were you at the time? I am 33 and it’s still long. I usually wear a pony-tail & it’s past my shoulders. I started growing it around age 17. I had longer than normal hair as a child too (around 5-6 years old) as my folks were kind of hippy-ish

3) What made you decide to grow your hair out?** I stopped playing baseball (we had a no long hair rule) and I wanted to form a rock band. I think it was for the chicks more than anything.
1) Do you or have you ever worn your hair long? (If yes, please also answer the following too.)
Yes
2) What age are or were you at the time?
Twenty something, late forties
3) What made you decide to grow your hair out?
Lazy
4) If you you used to have long hair and now don’t, what was your motivation for getting it cut?
The first time I was working in a VW repair shop and kept running over my hair with the creeper and banging my head on the concrete. I have it long now cuz I’m lazy, chicks dig it and I work in IT so it’s almost expected.
Yes, wore it long (shoulder+ length) for a while when I was about 11-12 years old.
Just didn’t want to get it cut I guess. Got repeatedly called a girl on a plane flight with my sister, that might have led me to get it cut to “normal” length…that and becoming a teenager, sticking out isn’t a good thing, sad to say.
Started wearing it noticeably shorter in college, then in my mid 20s I started to notice thinning setting in so one day I buzzed it down to 1/2", then a couple of years ago I went to 1/4" and have stayed with that. Run a clipper through it every couple of weeks.
1) Do you or have you ever worn your hair long? Not too long, but down to my chin. 2) What age are or were you at the time? from 16-20 3) What made you decide to grow your hair out? Just the style at the time. It was during the Seattle/Alternative sceen.
**4) If you you used to have long hair and now don’t, what was your motivation for getting it cut?
**True story. I was downtown and a guy asked me for a cigarette thinking I was a chick. “Excuse me ma’am? May I borrow a cigarette?”.
