Guys named Norman.

Why do guys named Norman INSIST on being called Norm?
It’s not like “I prefer to be called Norm”, it’s like they get really pissy about it! “It’s NORM! NORM! NOT NORMAN!”

Yikes!

Since when is “Norman” a bad name but “Norm” not? I’ve even seen this shit in the movies (Armed and Dangerous).
Is Norman the 21st century version of Bruce? Did I miss a memo or WTF? The guys I know named Norman (ok, ok! Norm) don’t seem to want to talk about it. WTF

I know two people named Norman, and they both prefer it. YMMV.

On a side note, there’s a restaurant chain called Norms (no apostrophe). The signs in the lots say “PARKING FOR NORMS ONLY”. I have to wonder where all the mutants have to go for down-home cooking.

You should start calling these guys Norm-O and the Norminator and so on.

After that treatment, I’m sure they’ll be glad to be called Norman, if they’re still speaking to you.

For the rest of the evening, I’d like to be called princess.

j.c., that’s great…it should be applied to all people with unjustifiable name hang-ups. “The Normster, freaking out about being called “Norman.” The Normarama.”

Normani.

I think a thread mover will be along…

Hey, Orange Skinner! Are we following each other this morning? :dubious:

Well, I have an uncle whose given name is Norman – he prefers to be called “Bud”. AFAIK, no one calls him Norm or Norman.

Okay, I’ll talk about it. My legal name is Norman, but I “strongly prefer”, but don’t “insist”, to be called Norm. This started in 1961 when Sue Thompson recorded the song Norman (unfortunately very popular at the time). She sings the line “Norman, ooh, , ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh”. This was sung at me way too much by my friends.:o I was 16 at the time and definately trying to project a manly image. This sure didn’t help. So I started going by Norm (more manly I thought). Ah, those self-conscious teen-age years.

Well, after this blew over, there arrived the unfortunately named play/movie “Norman, Is That You?”. In the play/movie Norman is Gay, I’m Straight. So periodically I would hear someone saying “Norman, is that you?” To which I would respond “No it’s not” So, in a way, Norman took on the connotation of Bruce.

These days, I’ve been going by Norm for years, I hear the NORM greeting from “Cheers”. I like this better.

Anyway Hayduke Lives!!, “That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.”

At least it’s better than being “A Boy Named Sue” WTF
