So what is it Oprah is actually supposed to do that she didn’t? Run the school herself? Have spies and overseers and hidden cameras all over the place? If there were signs she missed in hiring bad people, or hiring people who she should have known were not good enough, that’s worth pitting, but there isn’t any indication of that as far as I know.
I’ve never been an Oprah fan, but you’re coming across as an asshole who is gleeful at what happened down there because you didn’t like Oprah and this gives you an excuse to talk shit about her. If you’re going to pit her and say what a horrible person she is, do everybody else the favor of having a good reason.

ddg, you are not getting my point. No I don’t think it is sensible for someone in Chicago to be able to know of the day to day affairs of a school in SA. My point is, don’t claim you are, which she does.
And do you know much about child abuse, like how long it takes on average for someon to run from it? In the time it took to come to that, no one at the school got word to Oafrah that there was a girl or girls becoming withdrawn, or whatever signs there are? Girls are beaten and no other school teachers or admins get word of it?
As for the luxuries, you can help someone overcome poverty merely by providing them a school and textbooks and a safe place to learn- I don’t see where 300 TC sheets come into play.

No, please do enlighten me. My understanding, gleaned from 35 years experience in the adult world, is that abuse can go on for years, decades even, before the victim summons up the nerve to say anything. Oprah’s school opened in January. Ten months doesn’t seem like an extraordinarily long time for a situation of abuse to have time to develop from “abuse” to “abuse bad enough that the victim finally says something”. It actually seems pretty short, as these things go.

I have no objection to what she’s done beyond that. Except her actual show, I mean.

I would probably go for that if she claimed to be a Christian, which she doesn’t. I think that particular passage isn’t nearly as brilliant as the parts of the bible that I cherry pick and like. I mean, how would one get publicity for their projects for which they wish to raise awareness, if they don’t publicize it?
Diogenes, I know that, unlike the OP, you’re not a drooling moron, so maybe you can explain to me what Oprah did wrong here? She opened a school in South Africa. Since she’s not an educator or academic administrator herself, she hired someone she thought would be competent to manage the day-to-day functions of the school, and report to her if there were any major problems. When a major problem occured, the person responsible for telling her about it, didn’t tell her about it. As soon as Oprah learned from another source what was going on, she fired the person directly accused, she fired the person who failed to tell her about the situation, she flew directly to the location and personally apologized for what happened.
Where, in this flow of events, did Oprah do something she should not have done, or not done something she should have? The only obvious thing I can see was hiring Dr. Mzimune, but I don’t see how much moral culpability attaches to Oprah over that. Someone had to be put in that position, and it seems unlikely that Oprah would deliberatly hire someone incompetent or corrupt for that position, if for no other reason than the potential PR fallout when the person screws up. Even if we take your characterization of Oprah’s motives at face value, I still don’t see how she should have acted differently in this circumstance.
