Haiku for a Squirrel

Haiku for a Squirrel

Oh acorn lover,
Did you fall out of the tree?
Lily was waiting.

Your thick bushy tail
Was seen through the windowpane
All the live long day.

The ear piercing barks
Rang out through the neighborhood
Morning to noon time.

What happened to you?
Your little joke backfired un-
pleasantly today.

A bunny, a squirrel
Gone forever to heaven
Leaving friends behind.

Oh squirrel chattering
At me from up in the tree:
Learn the lesson now.

This is not a joke.
A Jack Russell Terrier
Should not be messed with.

What to do with a
Dead animal in the yard?
Is it suppertime?

My daughter Katryn
Told me a crazy story
The squirrel disappeared.

She went out to check
To see if it was dead yet
And the squirrel was gone.

She heard scampering
Going up the nearby tree
A squirrel with a fur collar.

The chattering squirrel
From earlier in the day
Had rescued his friend.

Way up in the trees
On West Oviatt Road-Bay
A squirrel hospital?

Somebody stop me
now, I can’t stop, I need some
sleep. Heaven help me!

ummmm… yay? so the squirrel lived at the end right (presumably)?

Never knew you had such talent! Perhaps an epic musical work, Requiem (For A Squirrel), will be next. May the nightmare be over, and the backyard safe from stunned squirrels.

It was the front yard.

I think I now need to write some haiku about squirrels attacking us in revenge. So far it hasn’t happened yet.

I don’t know if it is alive or not. Has anyone ever heard of a squirrel taking another squirrel up a tree?

The dog was barking frantically at the downed squirrel when I found it. I don’t know if it fell and she grabbed it then let it go or what. Once she brought us a little bunny that was still alive but died soon after. Once she brought us a bird with no head–I assumed damaged by a cat or something. Once she pulled a chipmunk out of a hole but let it go and it took off. She digs lots of holes, sometimes a foot deep, that have a little chipmunk hole at the bottom.

You would think the chipmunks and squirrels would just move to another yard.

Hmm? Oh sorry, false alert.

Carry on.

As for squirrels taking squirrels up trees, unless this one was a little little baby, then the answer it no. If you dog was in the house, probobly a cat or, (depending on where you live) a coyote fox or hawk took it. Either that or it recoved enough to climb up the tree, I just saw a squirrel with a broken leg recently that couldn’t walk, yet managed to climb up.

Maybe so, because at first he was on his side with his eyes almost shut, but still breathing. When I had to leave he had turned over onto his tummy.

But my daughter swears she saw the other squirrel going up the tree (obviously facting the tree) with the other squirrel around his neck across the front.

Alas, I did not witness the event.

People say I should have just smacked it with a shovel or something and ended it, but I just couldn’t. This living, breathing animal was dying and I felt it was my fault.

Not a haiku, but…

Chattering squirrel in a tree
How more annoying could you be?
My dog, you’re so tormenting him
Be careful you don’t fall off that limb

Hey, a friend who is an English professor informed me that a haiku has no verbs. Also, I was assuming for my purposes that squirrel is one syllable.

So much for my talents as a haiku writer. She said it was a nice imagist poem.

Lil, I’ve taken the liberty of translating the first eight stanzas of your poem into squirrelese so you can share it with all your friends.
