So I’m growing my hair out, Johnny Depp style. My wife says that I’m finally embracing the Metrosexual inside myself. The problem is that my hair has never been this long before and I’m coping with with all of the logistics that go along with longer hair: shampoo, wind, over the ears, poking me in the eye.
I also work in Customer Service, so I wear a headset most of the day. This is convenient because it keeps it back, out of my face. But what about other times? Is there an acceptable hair accessory, like a hair band, that a heterosexual male can wear?
The ponytail is your only option. I saw a guy with barettes one time, and he looked stupid, and even a little crazy.
If your hair isn’t long enough to pull it all back, you can do a “half-a-head” ponytail, but only certain guys can pull that off. Or, if you can get away with a hat, that’ll pass too.
You’ll also need to find a good hairstylist that’s well-experienced with men’s longer hair – all those long-haired celebs don’t just let it grow whatever which way a-la Saddam Hussein. For until it is long enough to “tail” it (and BTW apparently the ponytail not unanimously supported by followers of the well-groomed-refined-clean-but-edgy-straight-male trend) you will have to rely on cut and application of “product” to keep it off your face. Or, as mentioned, a hat.
a coworker uses sunglasses for this purpose. he wears the sunglasses outside and then when he is out of the sun he pushes them up, using them as a headband. you could try reading glasses as well.
