Ladies, I saw a woman today and she had her hair dyed three different colors and I was wondering .
How much would some thing like that cost ?
I don’t expect an exact number but about how much would that cost at a normal hair stylist ?
The pricing typically depends on how many colors and the overall length of the hair.
My hair is naturally dark sandy blonde with a hint of copper. When my hair was below my shoulders, I would have it highlighted a lighter blonde (one color only) all the way through and it would cost me no less than $150 per session.
I don’t go to hair salons anymore because their rates are seriously just outright ridiculous. I can go to Sally’s beauty supply, buy the same shit they used, watch a YouTube tutorial, and do it my damn self for less than $30.
Yeah, I kinda thought it would be some really high amount.
When my wife would get her hair dyed, it would be about $75.00. That was about 10 years ago.
Her hair was about shoulder length and dark brown.
The girl I saw had purple, pink and green hair and I just wondered what some thing like that would cost.
She may have had it done at hair and beauty school. In which case it would have cost very little.
If she did it herself, perhaps a bit less than $30 (roughly $8-$10 for each color of dye) -if she had naturally light hair. It would jump to $40-$50 if she needed to bleach it out first.
If she had it done professionally, I’d say $150 would be a good lowball, and $300-400 would not be unreasonable if her hair was long, curly, dark, or the colors were exceptionally vibrant and well-applied.
I will also add that many ‘normal’ hair stylists do not work with special effects cuts or non-human colors, and so you have to add the hassle of finding someone who actually knows what they’re doing, instead of simply frowing at a couple of bottles and pretending they’re experienced with lime green color mixing.
There’s also the small detail that hair gets washed and styled, which makes the color leech out, and it also grows out, so that depending on the colors and the treatment, that cost might need to be incurred as often as every month or 6 weeks to continue looking good.
Definitely going to depend on the length and starting color, your town, the experience of the colorist, and the level of salon you’re going to. You can, in Chicago, probably find someone willing to do a three color block job for around $100, but I wouldn’t advise it, unless you’re naturally a platinum blonde and a bad job wouldn’t ruin your month. $200 will get you a colorist who actually went to school, and you could easily be looking at $300-400 for one of the best.
The materials cost about $15 per color if you’re buying them online or at a drugstore. I’m sure salons get a discount, but on more rare colors, probably not a very big one. So if you figure materials cost times two plus time (each color can take up to an hour)…it’s not surprising it adds up fast.
It may have been temporary hair color. There are several different types available at places like Sally Beauty; some spray on, some dry chalk, I’ve messed around with Liquid Chalk to make purple streaks in my hair. They cost around $6 to $10.
Also, you can do it very cheaply (and permanently) with Kool Aid – lots of video tutorials on Youtube.
