Wait a minute. Is this the same SkySlash that told us that he was absotively posilutely NOT gay??

ducks and runs

Ignore him, Sky. It depends how willing you are to fry your hair. If you are open to a good fry, you can pick up one of those box kits (though if you want one to go brown and one to frost it blonde, you’ll need two) and get a friend to do it for you. Here in Burlington, back in the day when I used to get mine highlighted, it usually ran me $5 a foil, or about $35 total. But it’s usually WAY more expensive in larger cities.

If I were you, I’d get it done professionally, that way they make the decisions on what exact shade you get, and you don’t accidently die your head black. And if you get a good hair dresser, they won’t be shy in telling you “Are you kidding? You can’t go red, you’ll look like a freakin’ ghost!” (not that I’m bitter or anything, he was right…)

Go for it… I think you’d look great! I would definitely go to a professional though. I have brown hair and blond highlights and I love it! (of course I’m a woman and I’m supposed to like doing stuff with my hair!) If you don’t like it you can always change it. Coloring my hair has never caused my hair to fry or get frizzy either so don’t worry about that. If it does get fryed, you can shave your head bald and start all over!

I guess if I don’t just do it, I’ll never know will I?

So what can I expect this to run me in a big city?

You want to dye it brown THEN highlight it? Then expect to spend money. Color doesn’t lift color, so you’d have to use bleach to do the highlighting part. Then you’d have to see what color comes up because bleach is somewhat unpredictible. Usually brown lifts very warm tones (think orange) so you’d have to use a toner with ash undertones to counteract the warmth. And that’s IF it does come up warm. It may come up spotty so you’d have to put a toner on THAT to balance it out. It also may…well, you get the idea. We’re talking a two step process.

I’ve done that service to people and it usually costs between $60-$80 (once over $100). It all depends on how the highlighting turns out.

Not trying to discourage you, hon, just want you to know what to expect.
Of course, it all depends on the system the salon you are going to uses. So, in a nutshell, don’t try it yourself (I’ve done PLENTY of corrective coloring on people who do it themselves!). Ask questions. Have fun! And let us know how it turns out!
