I don’t mind ageing - i am 36 now. But there is one particular sign of ageing that is really bugging me. My furry/hairy ears. they don’t have big clumps of hair growing out the holes, (yet!?) just annoying external downy hair that is getting increasingly difficult to just pull out from between me fingers.
Ok, this may be vain - but is there a way of getting rid of the hair? Is waxing recommended?
I am male by the way, and single, and possibly about to hit the “dating scene” again (which i hate and am completely bobbins at), and also wondered - women, are furry ears a factor in your deciding whether a guy is worth pursuing? The thing is, i do not know whether i am just getting vainly paranoid. In a certain light, all the furry stuff shows up really badly, and in another light, it’s gone.
I was also going to ask about the recently developed course hair on my back and backside  - but i aint looking at getting to that stage for quite a while yet anyway
I don’t think I would notice, nemesis, and as 31 year old woman just hitting the scene again as well, I am the target audience… except you are thousands of miles away.
As far as getting rid of it, can’t help you too much, waxing ears sounds too painful. I would probably tweeze… depends on how many there are.
When my son was younger and I’d take him to the barbershop, I’d see the barber trimming the ear and nose hairs (ewwww!) for some of his older customers. Apparently it’s included in their job description.
But unless you’re sprouting a forest from your ears, most women aren’t going to worry about it. Now, a furry back is probably a much bigger turnoff for most women, at least the ones I know.
Plucking takes a while, is a tad painful (I do it on my eyebrows), but the results last for a while–a month or so, depending, and it’s no more expensive than the cost of tweezing apparatus.
Waxing seems like it’d be hard to implement around your ears.
My mother, who’s full-blooded Italian, had electrolis done to her upper lip. It worked very well…she had the proceedure done every couple of weeks about a year ago, and so far nothing has grown back, but she told me it was expensive and fairly painful. However, the results are permanant for most people.
I wish you the of best luck in your hair-removal process, whatever your choice may be, nemisis. May the results be as pain-free as possible, and may the hair take a long time to grow back.
Same thing happened to me in my mid-30’s. (I’m 39 now). I just add my ears to the shaving routine, but only about once every two weeks. It works pretty well, and I only nick myself occasionally (usually the tragus is what suffers the nick.)
Here’s a comforting thought: in a few years, you’ll think back to when you were this age and feel quite wistful about the relative sparsity of hair in your ears.
My theory is that the hair from the top of your head migrates downward as you age, so you might want to get an extra mirror so you can begin monitoring the progress of your balding. Take some pictures, so you can ‘remember when’.
nemesis, I would prefer a hairy guy to a smooth one. Seems more natural.
As to the ear hair, don’t wax, use the clippers if it matters to you.
I once saw an older couple in O’Hare Airport in Chicago. As they were waiting for a plane the wife got out a pair of clippers and proceeded to clip her husband’s ear hair, right there in public. But wait! That isn’t the best part. Finished with that, she had him tilt his head back and then she clipped his nose hairs.
Baker - that is an amazing story. What kind of woman is upset about her husband’s “Lou Grant” look but not worried about public snout-hair trimming? That’s nuts.
For the record, I am absolutely against nose hair, ear hair, and wild long eyebrows like a damn troll. And raggedy but clean nails on men make me crazy. On the other hand, honest grease stains and broken nails from hard work don’t bother me at all. It’s all subjective.
Thank you for the advice and anecdotes people, all good stuff
I had tried shaving them, and even though my ears are not small, i find the ear shaped structure fiddly and awkward to shave. I did not know you could get trimmers for them though. However, i will ask the barbers next time i go if they wouldn’t mind shaving \ trimming them for me - i never thought that they might offer such a service.
You think thats bad, try being a 36 year old woman that has suddenly started sprouting chin whiskers and big toe hair. Has anyone EVER shaved their toes?
I bet right now your mental picture of me resembles sasquach.
