From the article:
Go figure.
He must have watched the latest episode of The Last Man on Earth.
Which bathroom does this person use?

The first time I ever saw Steve Martin, he appeared on The Tonight Show (with Johnny Carson) wearing half a beard. As far as I could tell, it was real. That was his shtick.
I guess someone had blundered.
I remember that. Something about how he couldn’t decide how he should look for his first TV appearance. So the beard side was for all his friends and the clean-shaven side was for mom and dad.
Their’s not to make reply,
Their’s not to question why…
Actually no, this time, it is everybody’s to question why.
For some reason, this reminds me of how Peter Gabriel used to ‘do’ his hair.
This is your face.
This is your face on ‘Santa Claus’.
Any questions…?
Reminds me more of Peter Hammill’s portrait for the cover of The Future Now! (1978)
Larry Niven liked the idea of asymmetric beards:

Maybe this guy is a fanboy.
And Wunderlanders get very upset if you make fun of their look.
This guy…
Maybe he was arrested in the middle of cutting off his beard. Maybe he was trying to change his appearance after committing a crime.
Reminds me of the time I was at a concert in San Francisco (I don’t remember. Toiling Midgets or somebody) and this guy asked me to put half a face of makeup on him. It looked okay; then again, it was the 80s.
Amusingly apt somehow that the OP linked to an article in the Mirror.
