Half-Blood Prince casting news

I just read this.

Naomi Watts as Narcissa Malfoy! (yes, she is British even though people think of her as an Aussie)

Joseph Feinnes (brother of Voldy himself, Ralph)

Stuart Townsend

The roles of Feinnes and Townsend haven’t been announced yet. Who do you think they’ll play? Feinnes or Townsend as Morfin? Feinnes was born in 1970 and Townsend in 1972 so they’d both seem too young to play Marvolo.

Naomi Watts in a Harry Potter movie. I can’t wipe the delighted grin off my face!

Feinnes will be Tom Riddle, I bet.

This is NOT a cast list, just a WISH LIST. I’d love to see…

Marvolo Gaunt - Ray Winstone (Gleeson got a role, Winstone has to get one too)
Fenrir Grayback - Daniel Day Lewis
Slughorn - Bob Hoskins or Jim Broadbent
Scrimgeour - Ben Kingsley

Merope should be a newcomer, just as Lavender Brown will be. They had an open casting call for Lavender a few weeks ago. If not a newcomer, then Emily Mortimer would be great in the role.

Maybe not. For brothers, they don’t look very much alike, plus I think Joseph’s too old (37) to play a young Tom Riddle but if that’s his role, great. I’ve always wanted to see Ralph and Joseph in the same film, though it wouldn’t seem they’d have any scenes together.

Am I mistaken, or were there rumours of some bad blood between Ralph and Joseph a while back?

I really hope not–Joseph would make a fabulous Tom Riddle pre-Voldemort (Townsend’s the better choice to play Morfin, IMHO).

As for Scrimgeour, I could see Ian McShane taking on the role…

Naomi Watts doesn’t make much sense as Mrs. Malfoy. I pictured a nastier woman. The book describes her as seeming to have always smelled something awful.

My guesses are Joseph Fiennes as Tom Marvolo Jr. (or Sr.?), with Townsend as Morfin.

The male roles, that I can think of, are:
Fenrir Greyback
Scrimgeour
Bill Weasley
The Prime Minister
Horatio Slughorn
Morfin
Gaunt Sr.
Tom Riddle Sr.
Young Dumbledore (?)

Have you seen “Shakespeare in Love”? Ralph has an uncredited appearance as Ben Marlowe, while Joseph plays Will Shakespeare. The extent of their interaction is a chat in a tavern.

Helen Mirren would be perfect as Narcissa Malfoy.

Call me thin-skinned, but recently J. K. Rowling was quoted as saying how proud she was that all of the Potter films had ONLY British actors.

I have seen all the films and thought they were quite good, but can you imagine the uproar if an American author praised the fact that all their films ONLY had American actors and no Brits?

I mean, godforbid an American actor would be cast in a role in a Potter film. Would the spell be broken and the sun stop shining? Again, not complaining at the casting to date - all quite good and the movies have been excellent - but Rowling’s comment does seem to be a bit xenophobic.

I will climb off my soapbox now. Sorry for the slight hijack, but as long as people are throwing out casting suggestions…

I don’t know if this is what you’re referring to, but one of the conditions of the original film contract was that the film be set in Britain and feature British actors. IMO she was right to request it. The film industry tends to go a bit far in making books more appeasing for American audiences. Imagine Harry Potter originating in New York or California. Ridiculous.

FYI neither Richard Harris nor Michael Gambon are British.

Before this goes too far…don’t get me wrong. The films have been FANTASTIC so far, and I agree, the last thing we needed was for Hogwarts to be in located in Malibu, California with Robin Williams as Dumbledore teaching Harry to surf.

But even the classic Gone With The Wind cast a Brit as Scarlett O’Hare and the film didn’t suffer by adding a “foreigner” to the cast.

Seriously…sorry I brought up the subject, but it just caught me by surprise to hear of the casting limitations. Not that they don’t do it in Hollywood, but usually they are sneakier about it and don’t freely admit that non-Americans would never be cast in the roles.

Didn’t mean to get carried away. Are there any Americans in the whole series?

I think she just meant that there were obvious business reasons for big name US stars to be placed in the movie as a draw for US audiences. These pressures were overcome so she’s happy with the mainly* Brit cast as it really is a Brit thing after all.

  • Moody is played by an Irish guy and I’m sure there are others who I can’t think of at the moment. Not too sure of Michael Gambon’s citizenship but he was born in Dublin.

It is very common for movies shot in the UK that have American funding, that a stipulation is often made that they include at least one American actor, usually as one of the leads. Rowling’s just pointing out how it’s great that this has not occurred for this particular production throughout the entire series so far - i.e. for its rarity, not for any anti-American reason.

Seriously, something’s stinky…

Excuse me, I think you plebes are stinking up my red carpet.

Helen Mirren would be perfect as Malfoy’s grandmother. But she’s too old to pull off being the young MILF of a 15 year old boy.

Are you sure you don’t mean Rupert Everett, uncredited as Christopher Marlowe? I’m pretty sure I’d remember Ralph staining one of my favorite movies with his icky broody whisper. Especially a movie containing the lust of my life, Joseph Fiennes.

Once again I get my dark-haired British actors mixed up. Obviously I only had eyes for Mr. Fiennes. I’ll armwrestle ya for him, WhyNot.

Or I’ll just retreat to my corner and weep over my waffles. But how can I cry when I’ve got waffles? Not possible!

ETA: I got my famous dead Englishmen mixed up, too! Not even in the right centuries. Stupid waffles can’t fix that.

Griphook the Goblin in Sorceror’s Stone was played by Verne Troyer, better known as Mini-Me from the Austin Powers movie. True, it was a bit part, but it was a speaking part.

Not that I am aware of, it’s nearly an entirely British universe. Some forays into Europe, but that’s about it. There is mention of a group of American witches at the Quidditch Cup during Goblet of Fire, but they are just set dressing, so to speak. (I’m talking about the origin of the actual literary characters, not the actors, by the way.)

Yabbut, Warwick Davis (Professor Flitwick) did Griphook’s voice.
