Halftime, sponsored by Al Gore

Of course not. He’s apparently a 24%-er. It’s apparently a religious duty for them to be as pigheaded and wrong as possible.

Holy shit. I chose those examples specifically because they’re issues that are very well publicized that only a moron would actually doubt the validity thereof. And you actually went and took issue with them!

Bravo, sir. I join Richard Parker in congratulating you on giving us a tour de force of ignorance. This post belongs to the ages, now. A shining example of our culture’s capacity for stupidity. This board will little note nor long remember what I say here, but it will always recall that you are a complete and utter idiot.

I agree. I wish the potbangers would grow up.

In Happy Wanderer’s defense, he does make some reasonable points. Breast cancer “awareness” really isn’t doing society much anymore - people ARE aware of the need to get regular checks. What we need is more funding for researching new treatments(and of all cancers, not just cancer). But I’m not sure I believe, without a cite, that women’s diseases get disproportionate funding - sure, breast cancer is sexy, but is ovarian cancer? I hear far more about prostate cancer.

In addition, drunk driving hysteria is a problem. SADD and MADD do have agendas that go further than just opposing drunk driving, and border on being prohibitionist. That doesn’t mean that opposing drunk driving in general isn’t a bad idea, and that the lows in drunk driving pointed out by Happy Wanderer aren’t largely caused by anti-drunk-driving campaigns and tougher sentencing.

The other stuff (i.e. Muslim-bashing), well, the less said about those, the better.

That said, on the topic at hand, there are going to be people with their fingers in their ears about GW until well past the point where we can do anything meaningful about the effects. I think GW awareness is still very much appropriate. We need to get the evidence in people’s faces as is possible. Whether or not halftime is an appropriate time is best left up to the individual viewer, but, ignorance is absolutely rampant on this topic – including intentional spin created by those who want to maintain the status quo regardless of the circumstances. We as a society need to start dealing with the facts. That doesn’t mean the sky is falling, but we should be concerned with what science is demonstrating to us as climate change.

So Happy Wanderer, why do you call it the “Big Lie”? This seems like a very insensible position to believe that a small minority like yourself and Brazil84 know better than the scientist that are experts in this field. Have you bothers to read any of the reports from objective scientific sources? Where did you actually get the information to decide it was the “Big Lie”? I hope I am wrong, but it sounds like something that you would have picked up on talk radio.

For what it is worth, I appreciate that NBC wanted to do something to spread awareness of AGW, but I wish they had found a way that was not a bad joke.

Do you mean the pot bangers mentioned in George Kaplin’s post?

Jim

I was right with you on the NBC rant. The half-time show in football games is for showing highlights, not for running an extended advertisement for another NBC program.

But your whole ostrich trick regarding global warming is just d-u-m-b, DUMB. We’re talking tin-foil hat territory here.

HW, you just need to remember one thing:

Terrorism is the particular hobgoblin that the right likes to ride, Global Warming is the left’s. The problem isn’t GW, it’s the question of what it means, how severe a problem it actually is, what truly caused it, what we can or even should do about it and whether the “solution” will be worse than the “problem”. In spite of what the GW scaremongers would have you believe, there is hardly a universal scientific consensus on any of these points, so at the moment, publicly, the GW “debate” takes the form of “OMG! GW IS GOING TO KILL US ALL, AND THOSE GUYS ON THE OTHER SIDE DON"T CARE AT ALL! YOU BETTER VOTE FOR OUR GUYS, WE"LL PROTECT YOU!” Substitute “TERRORISTS ARE” for “GW IS” and you have the right’s agenda. Doesn’t mean that neither of these are things that we need to be concerned about, but it does mean that you can take choreographed scenes like the one at halftime last night with a grain of salt.

Oh noes! Someone is actually trying to make me pay for the externalities generated by my consumption of fossil fuels! Boo hoo! I don’t want to have to pay the actual cost of operating my gas guzzler! I want my consumption subsidized by other people in the form of air pollution, rising seas, lung cancer, and asthma! Boo hoo!

Fucker.

Attention, ladies and gentlemen. We have a new nominee for the “SDMB award” (the Cecil ™) for the category “ Most Asinine and Outrageous Posting”. The other nominee is the illustrious guest poster, oestert. Anyone want to place bets on how long before Wanderer is escorted from the building in a straightjacket?

I accept there is GW and question some of the AGW arguments but I think the halftime program was just grandstanding.

Old saying “ignorance is bliss” When I see the OP’s name in the future, I’ll say to myself: “The Blissful Wanderer.”

I will when we are at risk of spending $1T, and 3,000 soldiers’ lives on GW.

Don’t forget a few hundred thousand Iraqi lives, our worldwide reputation going into the crapper, and the assault on our constitution and our civil liberties. When GW’s so-called “scaremongers” create such atrocities, we can equate the two. Meanwhile, the risk of following them is … what, a cleaner earth and maybe some higher taxes on gas-guzzlers? Jesus. How selfish and short-sighted can you be?

Agreed. Meanwhile football and NASCAR are fucking commercials for jingoism.

It’s the same old bullshit that they said back in the 60’s and 70’s when the push was on to control industrial emissions into the waterways and air. “Oh, it’s too expensive! All the companies will go broke and close their doors!” It’s still bullshit.

I ache with embarassment.

I think halftime belongs to football. And I work at a research University, and know why IPCC has come to the consensus assessment that global warming is “unequivocal” and “very likely” the result of human activity.

But this is football for crissake. First they put Farve’s wife in the booth, then they pull this. I want to see video of what is happening around the league, dammit!

:stuck_out_tongue: I forgot the thing about the halftime show that bugged me the most: the campaign theme was “Green is Universal.” The game was on NBC, part of NBC Universal (combination of GE and Vivendi Universal), so while the planet’s important and all, they weren’t selfless enough to pass up a chance to, ugh, grow the brand.

I got news for them. The color of the universe is closer to beige than to green.

After shuttering NFL Europa, engaging in “Green is Universal” sloganeering is the most surefire way to develop an international focus & woo those who gave us the Club of Rome.

Yeah, or just use halftime to remind everyone that TVs burn a shitload of energy and the best thing for the environment would be to turn them all of during the second half.

Do I have to think of everything?
