Halle Barry: Rein in in

Nitpick: She actually said “We wnd it here.”

[sub]This makes me a bad person, doesn’t it.[/sub]

I have to disagree Wring. There was the matter that there was an allegation that I think I had a right to disprove…which I think I did. Realistically maybe it needed to stop at my last “Prior to the crash, this board smacked of rivalries and pettiness and had some pretty scary damn socks/trolls. Let’s not let this accusation of yours turn into a blight on this “new” board.” but it didn’t because my email was not availabale. Maybe opening another thread would have been appropriate…but I did not. The email has been posted…discuss with me what you will.

But for Mr. Cynical to make such a smarmy smartass comment like that and for me to ignore it is against my nature…however, I am done now. Cynical…if you want to take it further then open yourself up a pit thread about me.
Jar, sorry for contining to hijack your thread…damn if it ain’t a hot topic.

BBJ that now makes six responses to this thread after the offer to let it end. to jars one.

I can only speak for myself, but in these sorts of cicumstances where the issue is ‘you’re mean to me’ ‘no I’m not’ ‘yes you are’, I don’t see additional postings of “no, I’m not, prove it” to be all that productive.

your mileage obviously varies.

We wind it here?

End. End end end end end.

END! End end.

[sub]Fuck.[/sub]

Hey Tretiak I like that sig

Wring, cool see your point…but I disagree…

Anyhoo, anyone find any articles from the black community criticizing Halle? I think it would be interesting if thre were some…

I bet chimps and dogs were also in movies before any black people. Probably also got paid about the same.

IMHO, Hollywood is a total cesspool, and space exploration is something that furthers human knowledge. That’s why I think a black space pioneer should be more celebrated than the awarding of a statuette.

BottledBlondJeanie, jarbabyj, TAKE IT TO EMAIL! BBJ has given an email address. I don’t want to hear any more from either of you about the other. I also note that we have an “ignore” option. I suggest you both use it on the other, but do NOT make a note of this on the boards.

For the Straight Dope

Sorry Lynn!

<whacking self on head w/ nearest book ala Python>

I loved Halle’s speach, I teared up to hear it…

The way her husband, who so clearly loves her, stood and cheered her on when she choked on the words, the honest and sincere expression of disbeleif when they called her name…that was beautiful.

It was wonderful to see someone win who didnt assume they would.

Eh, we Asians all look alike anyway.

Absolutely. A thousand times more interesting and exciting than JC’s canned speech which she wrote because she was so sure she would win. Bleh.

Man, Halle was playing the race card right from the fucking beginning. Did you happen to see the little promo she taped after it was learned she was nominated for the Oscar? It was non-stop “oh, I’m so proud to be nominated. BTW, I’m also African-American and no African-American woman’s won this award before. You might want to think about that. ::wink::” That’s not a word for word translation, of course, but she was heavily playing the race card. Besides… should Halle Berry really get credit for being the first African-American woman to get the best actress oscar? She’s half-white.

Sure, it’s an accomplishment, and sure, she’s considered part of the black race, but she’s also half-white. This isn’t to say that she shouldn’t be proud, but she doesn’t seem to celebrate her whiteness as much as her blackness. I just think she should.

P.S.: I admit this makes absoultely no sense at all. None. Just to amuse myself, I’ll share a schoolyard chant I made up to drive Miss Berry insane:

HALLE HAS A HONKY MOMMY!

It made me uncomfortable. Whether because I was watching someone acting delibrately hysterical or because there was an actual genuine emotion occuring at the Oscars I’m not sure.

One thing we cynics hate are real emotions during canned ceremonies.

Didn’t see the Academy Awards.

Halle is gorgeous and Denzel is a doll, of course. But while we’re talkin’ about black actors/actresses (though that is NOT really specifically what this post is about) let’s take a look at Morgan Freeman, Samuel Jackson and Forrest Whittaker. I love those guys - they’re all immensely talented and appealing in their own ways. I’ll go out of my way to see a movie that any of them is in.

But I think the real Hollywood break-through will be the day a woman (of any color) who looks at all like any of those guys or is even as old as any of them (or any number of similar older, not-classically-pretty male Hollywood actors of any race) gets the same visibility and star roles they have. And when they do, I want to see these women with sexy, younger men playing their love interests.

THAT, Halle, will be a breakthrough.

Jillgat, I salute you!

I don’t think anybody winning an Oscar will encourage someone to be an actor or actress. I think the fact that Halle Berry even gets roles would be enough. People don’t become actors so that they can win an Oscar. The fact that she got the role in the first place is enough to bring more people in. That’s like saying that Jackie Robinson breaking the color line wasn’t enough. He had to win an MVP or a Rookie of the Year award before a barrier was broke.

I think we are placing too much on the awards itself. We all know that the Oscar is supposed to reward the best performance of the year but we all also know very well that the best performance is often left out.
She didn’t break any barrier because the Oscar award is not really a barrier. The barrier was broken when blacks get leading roles that are worthy of nominations.

I have to agree with Oblong.

I don’t think Halle’s winning an Oscar changed anything. The fact that she got a Oscar-winning role means something. Everybody is talking about Dorothy Dandridge and other coloured actors from the past, but fact is : they didn’t star in the best roles of those years.

I cannot believe the Oscar-awards are influenced by prejudice. They are however tainted by commercial interests.

I still think Halle Berry shouldn’t have gotten an Oscar, because she played in the worst movie ever : Swordfish. I think that all actors, directors and other people involved in that particular overhyped piece-of-shit should be banned for life from all things linked to entertainment. (John Travolta would make a decent plumber, I think).

You know, people have mentioned a couple of things that have an interesting link:

  1. Halle knowing to hold her palm about a half-inch in front of her face to deal with crying but to avoid mussing her make-up - he poster mentioned to look for this maneuver at a beauty contest…

  2. Whether Halle had prepared a speech beforehand.

Ummm, maybe its just me, but wasnt’ Halle a beauty contest participant? Wasn’t she something like Miss Ohio, or Miss Teenage Ohio or something?

I’ll see if I can find a cite. Please, don’t get me wrong, I haven’t seen the movie, and am happy that she, as an A-A woman broke open a door, and, by all acounts gave a great performance that was deserving, but the speech was over the top, and I found the whole arc of the speech, with shaking reaction, befuddlement, quickly moving into a structured, commentary (with lists) on the immensity of the event, to be VERY reminiscent of a beauty contest victory speech. YMMV.

Anybody else consider this beauty contest connection?
