HALP - System Event Notification

Posting from a phone so please bear with me. >_<

Turning on the laptop earlier I encountered some problems: The loading “welcome” screen took way longer than usual, maybe three minutes. Then the screen sat there black for even longer, maybe TEN, with only the cursor visible. Finally the Windows start-up chime plays and everything appears. But there’s a pop-up:

“Windows could not connect to the Event Notification Service service. The problem prevents limited users (we only have the one main user account) from logging on to the system as an admin user. You can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn’t respond.”

In the Services program the SENS is listed as “starting” as opposed to “started” like the other programs. I can’t get online. Hovering the cursor over the connection icon reads “the dependency service or group failed to start.” Online I read about running “sfc /scannow” in CMD as a solution but it gives me an error: “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix them. Details are included in the CBS.Log (access denied)”

Safe mode boots nice and quick but I can’t get online. I’m on Vista.

Help me SDMB, you’re my only hope!

Thanks in advance.

Update: Somewhere on the Microsoft site I found a potential fix. I put “netsh Winsock reset” into the command prompt and restarted the computer. Behold! The wait problem has been fixed! The sucker starts up right away now. But I STILL can’t connect to the net. The network sharing center isn’t seeing the modem at all (no router). The modem’s bottom light (the one that would turn off if I disconnected the modem from the computer) isn’t blinking so it isn’t recognizing the computer either. :frowning:

The System Event Notification program in Services is now listed as “started.”

When I use Diagnose and Repair in the Sharing Center it confirms there’s a problem it can’t repair automatically but I think it would say that normally if I simply didn’t have it connected to a modem.

Ideas would be greatly appreciated.
