Ham on the Street

I left the TV on after watching Alton (all hail Alton Brown!) and it seems to me that this is the most worthless waste of a 1/2 hour I have ever experienced. Currently he is making people shove whole Twinkies in their mouths (is there nothing people won’t do to get on TV  ). Channel surfing the other day I saw this guy cooking hotdogs over different newspapers and making people guess the paper he used to cook the dog. Is there a point to this at all? Is it supposed to be funny ('cause it’s not). Any fan out there want to point out some redeeming quality of this show that I just haven’t seen yet?

Perhaps I’m just bitter because it took over a timeslot from Good Eats but I don’t think that’s it.

For those of you who don’t have your Magic 8 Ball handy – I am talking about shows on the Food Network :smack: . Sorry about that.

I describe the guy as Alton Brown with a mean streak.

A while back the channel did a marathon of shows focusing on chocolate. The Ham (whatever his name is, I don’t remember) took to the public, asking people if they’d like to eat 50% cocoa or 100% cocoa, then relishing at the faces people made when they shoved a bar of pure bitterness into their mouths. I laughed too, mostly because of the “more is always better” people getting just desserts, but there were some children that looked like they may have been traumatized from eating chocolate for the rest of their lives.

On the Good Eats immediately afterwards, Brown held up a bar of baker’s chocolate and said essentially “This is really bitter, and you don’t want to eat it straight.”
It’s like being told not to stick your fingers in the light socket versus being handed the fork.

The goat cheese truffle sounded interesting, but I could have done without the fawning over the store manager.

I think it’s kind of funny, myself, in a stupid way. I don’t suppose there’s any point to it; most of it’s just silliness, like carmelized onions mixed into ice cream. Something about his willingness to make up pure crap just for the hell of it charms me.

No, I’m not going to learn anything from his show, but it entertains me. Stupid things for their own sake matches my temperament quite well. It takes all kinds, right?

His camping show was interesting, as he wasn’t mean to everyone that passed by.

I’ve only seen one other episode and he was just mean to unsuspecting folks. And we’re supposed to like him because he’s “JUST LIKE ALTON” if you believe Food TVs hype.

The show like an udder- it looks funny, gives great milk, makes great cheeze and warms you to the tits.

Silly/stupid for its own sake is usually pretty much my bag (love Monty Python). Alton is silly and I’m his #1 fan.

I’m thinking that BraheSilver and FilmGeek hit the nail on the head – he’s not just silly, this guy can be mean.

Whew, I thought you were complaining about amateur radio operators.

No. But since you mentioned it that is something I’d really like to get into when I get some spare time…

I watched an episode of “Ham on the Street” that dealt with microwaving various foods. There were a few pretty funny parts. Watching stuff explode in a microwave does have a certain entertainment value. But the host (whose name I have forgotten) doesn’t amuse me nearly as much as he thinks he does. He’s gotta be the mutant spawn of Allen Funt and Emeril Lagasse. Gimme Alton Brown anytime. Ask him to bring some olive oil, a spatula, and a twinkle in his eye…
