I have unusually large hands. A 3XL glove is still a tight fit. Looking for a semi-auto in .40 cal or 10mm that I could hold comfortably. Looking for suggestions.
Thanks!

The addition of Pachmayr grips may help, whichever model you end up with.
New grips and a full size gun as opposed to the “Commanders” models and you should be good.
Or just go out and buy a Desert Eagle in .50 AE. Sure, it’s bigger and more powerful than a .40 S&W or 10mm Auto, but since you’re in the small tail of the population who can actually grasp and shoot this pistol well you might as well flaunt it.
Just, good luck finding an IWB holster for it.

Or get an AMT Automag 3. Mine had grips so big I could hardly hold it. Took custom-made grips to make it manageable.
I can’t even figure how big your hands must be if they are too big for a double-stack 10mm.
I’m looking for information, Airman! What is a double stack?
Thanks
SSgt (circa 1970)
HK USP and Beretta both support pistols in .40 that are friendly for larger hands.
Refers to how the cartridges are loaded in the magazine. In line or single stack is when bullets are aligned one right on top of the other, like the 1911 .45, the luger, or the P38. Double stacks alternate vertical alignment to accommodate more bullets for a given magazine length. Double stackers make bulkier handles, as you can imagine.
10mm is already long as autoloader ammunition goes. Add the width of a double-stack magazine and it makes for a very large grip. Also notable for width are double-stack 1911s such as those made by Para-Ordnance.
Even if it may suit your hand, avoid 10mm. I have one (a Glock 29) and it is by far my least fired gun. You’ll never be able to afford to feed it with any regularity, and it’s quite snappy (to say the least).
A vote for the Desert Eagle. Almost any pistol can be made good for huge hands with the right grips but the Eagle comes standard pretty much that way. I would go for a more normal caliber (.357) but the big rounds can be fun as well. Depends on what you want it for; target or carry.
I can’t speak to the $$ of 10mm ammo, but as far as “quite snappy” goes, a 10mm lite (aka 10mm FBI) has the same ballistics as a .40 S&W. Matter of fact, .40 is just 10mm FBI in a shorter case.
Which is why I said to avoid 10mm. Just get .40 S&W and be done with it rather than paying nutso prices for 10mm.
Sure, but the OP has large hands and wants a pistol that will fill them. And a 10mm double stacked magazine will do that better than a .40 S&W double stacked magazine.
10mm vs .40SW
Your best bet is to go to a gun dealer and hold a few guns. Suggestions are fine, but it will always come down to personal preference.
Thanks for all the ideas. Guess it’s time to visit the Kittery Trading Post and Cabellas.
Para USA (formerly known as Para Ordnance) makes 1911 pattern pistols with a double stack .45 magazine. They are full size, hand filling guns.
Visit more from the standpoint of trying things on for size. When you aren’t sure what you want, a box store may not be the best choice. I’m one of those who still prefers the “pro shop” if one is available.
Are you thinking more target or combo with home defense and/or carry? If you are thinking straight target consider a single shot TC Contender or Jurras type platform.
