I lost my Visor Deluxe. sniff It appears to be gone forever. Luckily, I hotsynced right before I left on the trip on which I lost my Visor Deluxe forever. sniff But I’m still going to have to replace the damn thing, since I find it difficult to live without it.
Is it worth the upgrade to Platinum? It doesn’t have more memory, just a 2X the processor speed, and I’ve read that unless you use processor-intensive applications (which I do, but very, very rarely) you don’t even notice the difference.
So, if anyone has a Platinum, do you find it significantly faster?
Also, are there any upgrade complications, or could one hypothetically just hotsync it and end up with all the data from one’s Deluxe on the Platinum? They run the same version of PalmOS, right?
The Visor Deluxe runs PalmOS v. 3.1H. The Platinum runs PalmOS v. 3.5.2H, so I’m not sure about the synch compatibility. Oh, and it’s only 50% faster. Price difference is officially USD 100.
I’m a Deluxe owner, so I can’t say anything about the merits of the Platinum. But I couldn’t let this thread go unresponded - I’d FREAK if I lost my Visor.
Platinum owner here. It was $50 more than the Deluxe when I bought it, so I said what the hell.
It’s hard for me to compare, since I haven’t used the Deluxe that much. However, I use a lot of medical reference software (Harrison’s companion, Washington Manual, etc.), and some of my fellow students have said that these are too slow on their Deluxes. I have never had any such problem.
I’d say it was worth it for me, but I don’t know how useful it would be for the average user (or for you).
While we’re asking Handspring questions, has anyone had any experience with the 16 MB memory upgrade? I know it isn’t made by Handspring, like the 8 MB module is. I need to upgrade at some point, and I should probably go ahead and get the 16 MB, since I could fill up the 8 already.
Dr. J
Trust me. I did. I only began to breathe deeply again after I remembered that I’d just hotsynced, so everything was on the hard drive.
Doc, for 50 bucks it’d be a no-brainer for me, too, but currently there’s a $50 rebate on the Deluxe. The only big database I use is Noah, a free dictionary that I highly recommend.
Decisions, decisions.
