I think it is crapola. Total crapola. I’m willing to believe that deaf or Deaf people communicate differently, that’s an obvious truth but it does not excuse them from giving accurate information. I’ve encountered other deaf or Deaf people on-line and they don’t communicate in handy’s unique style.
This isn’t a pile-on because handy communicates differently. It’s a pile-on because he gives wrong information and gives misleading or no cites.
Spouting gibberish is the first sign of meningitis. You need to get a spinal tap IMMEDIATELY! Oh, and ask your doctors for some antibiotics while you’re there.

That’s a lousy excuse. Does he think hearing people speak with the same grammar as what we use in written communication? If I read aloud almost anything I post, it sounds unnatural - we too leave out words or say things in ways that don’t look right on the written page.
First I will say handy is obviously not an idiot, he just sometimes plays one here.
Agreed with Badtz. It has nothing to do with lack of hearing. Handy has a somewhat snippish manner of responding to questions, especially those that are computer related.
For ex: OP asks about finding/installing obscure drivers for some piece of windows hardware, or some such. (mentions windows OS type in the OP)
handy: “Well if you could tell us what operating system you have we might be able to help”, or “Why don’t you just read the (fucking) manual.”
I see this over and over.
Apparently he just skims the OP, fires off an answer and doesn’t even preview or think about it. Damned irritating.

Well, sometimes he shows an actual grasp of the question, and responds in a coherent way, although that is somewhat rare.

Maybe part of the reason he hasn’t been banned yet is that the SDMB administrators are being bribed by the users at those other boards.

I’m finally gonna butt into this conversation. When I joined, about 2 months ago, I read a post from Handy, found out he’s deaf, and took an initial liking to him because, well, I’m deaf, and it’s a kinship thing, sorta. I’ve been reading this thread as it went, and have had sufficient time to read his posts, and re-evaluate my liking to him.
FORGET THAT. Handy, I never in my life thought I’d get truly upset at a random-poster-on-some-message-board, but you managed to do it.
My first point is that it’s probably dangerous to blame ALL deaf people’s grammar-or-lack-thereof on deafness, INCLUDING claiming “I write this way because I’m deaf.” I think I have a very good grasp of the written English language, and not only am I deaf, but I have been my whole life, and communicate primarily in ASL. Bringing me to my second point, which is- -
Forgive the lack of a link, but I think it’s somewhere in ABTMB, handy states that he’s postlingually deafened adult. (Meaning he learned to speak before he lost his hearing) Without going into a long, drawn out explanation on deaf culture and why/how deafs sometimes tend to use what a speaking person considers ‘improper grammar’, that fact should be counterproductive to proving that makes a good excuse for posting style. I’m mortified to have that used as an excuse for acting like a rude buttnuggett, then announce that acting like a rude buttnuggett is part of the culture, and it should be accepted.
I spend a lot of time and energy in my life trying to clear up misconceptions about what I am like because of my deafness, it INFURIATES me to have another deaf person do this, thus, making me worry that I’m going to get lumped into “jerk” category, without doing anything wrong.
So, handy, thanks a lot for displaying such great examples of deaf culture. The only thing I am truly glad of is that I sincerely doubt the other dopers are going to look at me as a female version of you, based on my handicap. Fortunately, they’re smarter than that. (Obviously)
