Hangovers - preventions and cures

… and another poster advocated Gatorade in part due to sugar.

Any other comments specific to the benefits, timing and method (would a candy bar be just as good?) of getting some sugar into the bloodstream.

I have also heard that sweet drinks have major hangover potential so perhaps too much is bad but just a little is good.

Big Red soda and a burger. Cures what ails ya.

Big Red and a greasy burger sounds great! Just my speed.

If your hangover leaves you with an upsett stomach, a big bowl of menudo will settle it right down, if you can handle it.

Not any knew advice, just a story.

When I was in college, I always kept a 2 quart jar of water in my fridge.

When i got drunk, i would guzzle the whole thing, fill it back up and stick it back in the fridge.

2 hours later, i would have to pee, so I would do that, drink the jar again and fill it up again.

This would go on all night and hangovers were a thing of the past.

the night of: definitely as much water as you can handle.

Next Morning: Gatorade, reasonably greasy breakfast (bacon egg & cheese bagel is my fave) and more water.

If you have access to oxygen tanks, as I did at a previous job, it works wonders. Really and truly. Best hangover cure bar none.

Alternating glasses of plain seltzer with whatever I’m boozing on helps a bunch. If I wake up the next morning with the night before beating shitlumps on my head, this never fails to make me feel better:

  1. Two slices of Texas Toast or a toasted bagel slathered with Marmite and butter.
  2. Washed down with two quarts of ice cold Lemon Blennd.

Works like a charm every single time.

I’ve found that if one simply keeps drinking, there is no hangover.

I haven’t had a hangover in over six years.

However, if that is just not do-able, you can take heart with what W. C. Fields supposedly said about those who do not drink:

Words to the effect of “It is a horrible thought to wake up in the morning and know that is the best you’re gonna feel all day!”

How do you guys know about Big Red?

I was suffering through a dreadful hangover about 7 or 8 years ago, it was about 4 in the afternoon, I had tried everything, and my brain felt about 1/3 the size of skull, rattling around in there. I was reading some short story about a drunk who could “control” his hangovers, part of which was vitamin B. Went downstairs, popped a V-B and my small brain was gone in about 10 minutes. The way I figure it is that Vitamin B makes you pee a nice flourescent color and when your drinking, nice and clear, low on vitamin B, maybe, I’m not a doctor. Pop one before you go to bed and you may feel fuzzy and disconnected in the morning, but no headache, multi vitamins don’t seem to have the same effect as a straight vitamin B though, they just tend to make my stomach feel heavy.

My other cure, besides not getting sloshed is simply more alcohol, wake up, two beers big belt of booze and back in the sack. Nothings better than a breakfast beer, bacon and eggs in a can. I guess I need to add a disclaimer, this is really not good for going to work, but if its a Sunday and all you really need to do is putter around in the yard and watch some football, then your OK.

When I’m drinking, I try to alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated drinks. This spreads out the hydration over a longer period, which tends to help out.

Sleep in until noon or so. Then lots and lots of obscenely strong coffee, a plain flower tortilla or white bread, and the knowledge that about half the people around you are in the same situation.

I love college…

sigh FLOUR tortilla. I’ve never experimented with the medicinal qualities of flowers, and I’m not about to go chomp some chamisa Saturday morning.

Buy some hot peppers. Eat them. Cure or prevent, they work wonders.

I’m from Texas. I consumed many a Big Red and Freddie Burgers on the morning (okay noon) after the night before at the Dixie Chicken during my college days.

After drinking, I chug a pint or two of water and down a B vitamin or multi if no B is available. Then I drink about 1/2 a pint of milk. Off to bed I go with two more pints of water to keep on the night table.

In the A.M. I polish off another pint and take an aspirin (the kind with caffeine in it) and I eat about 4 or 6 soda crackers. I go back to sleep for another hour or two. Wake up, finish the other pint, eat more soda crackers, make some frighteningly strong coffee and I’m good to go. Works every time. I also do try to drink less than I used to when I go out. I’m not 25 anymore ya know.

I have to say, I am disappointed in the hydration method.

I went “liquor-treating” last night for Halloween, with many people from school. I made sure to eat a good lunch, plus drink plently of water beforehand. Then once I made it home, I ate something and drank plenty of water before bed.

And I still woke up queasy and with a splitting headache.

It really depends on what you’ve been drinking.

Beer: Lots of liquid going through you, so you have to replace those electrolytes and nutrients. Multivitamin, and two aspirin washed down with a V-8 before bed (and water if you haven’t been hydrating while drinking), and another V-8 with a hearty breakfast in the morning.

Wine: Worst hangover of all alcohol in my opinion, as it leaves me the most nauseous and I generally start getting a headache before I even go to bed. Water and two antacid to calm the acidity of the wine in your stomach, aspirin upon wake up with a light, carb-filled breakfast.

Shots, non-sweet (whiskey, vodka, etc): Hydration, aspirin before bed, and water with protein-packed breakfast. Lotsa meat and stuff.

Shots, sweet (Jager, Schnapps, Puckers, etc): Eat beef jerky before bed. The salt and protein helps out, big time. Drink extra water, take vitamin before bed and after waking, piankillers as necessary. Light protein breakfast.

Mixed drinks: If you drink anything with tomato juice, use V-8 as your mixer instead. Besides that, you have tje lot of liquid problem again, so drink V-8 along with your hydration, and get a good multi-vitamin. Nice, hearty breakfast in the morning.

I’ve heard of a product called “Chasers” to cure hangovers. Maybe it’s worth a try.

My method has never failed me, but hasn’t worked for a single friend. Maybe it’s just me, or maybe my friends are all just built oddly.

2 ibuprofen
1 hot shower
1 pot of strong coffee*

I don’t know that you need the whole pot, but that’s what I drink. I’ll wake up feeling like a bag of smashed assholes, but by the time I’m out of the shower I’m feeling better, and I’m fine by my 2nd cup of joe.

*Should be noted that I drink my coffee with sugar (probably a bit much) and whole milk

Hydration is key, especially before I drink any alcohol.

If I can sleep in, I sleep in as much as I can, then drink a lot of coffee, take lots of multivitamins, and eat lots of Mr. Noodles.

If I have to get up at a responsible hour, I slam a Red Bull the very minute I wake up, and take some multivitamins. I then go through my morning grooming routine as normal. On my way to work/class/etc., I stop at Starbucks for a four-shot venti non-fat cappucino and a scone or muffin; this is my usual breakfast, anyway. Throughout the day, I drink water like crazy.

Of course, I make it a point not to drink the night before I have to work or study. I can’t concentrate for shit when I’m hung over. I wish I could do my job hung over. My life would be so much more fun.
