Today (or yesterday) marks (or marked) the milestone of having gotten the first 1/8th of President Trump’s term behind us. Yay!!! How are you celebrating? I’m not going overboard, as I want to save the real fun for the grand finale. But I will have a few extra glasses of wine tonight and a cheery toast or two with friends.
Only 7/8th of the term left!!! (Assuming, of course, that he lasts the full term).
Oooh. An important milestone indeed. Thank you for calling attention to this important National holiday. I might have a drink or two myself. Maybe see a movie or have a nice dinner. I never thought we’d make it this far.
I’d like to celebrate by knowing that everyone finally realizes the election was over a long time ago, so like it or not, it is what it is and we are all dealing with it. That has not happened and I’m sadly reminded of it everyday.
For a hefty chunk of Americans this didn’t happen with the previous president over all 8 of his years. Nor his predecessor for certainly the last 4 and maybe all 8 as well. The memory grows dim.
Depending on which circles one runs in one might have missed one or the other of those historical precedents. Or even be missing the current election non-overness.
Things aren’t as bad as I was afraid they would be. The courts have held Trump back, congress is disorganized and Trump is crumbling under the weight of investigations.
I seriously hope the dems win the house in 2018, because then we can totally stop his legislative agenda and we can get legitimate investigations (right now the only legit investigation is Muellers IMO, and Trump can shut that down).
But overall, this hasn’t been as horrifying as I thought it’d be.
Yeah, I agree. It could have been much worse. But I still have to see his mug pretty much every day if I want to watch the news. I still wince every time I hear a newscaster say “President Trump”.
I’d rather recognize today, which is European Pi Day. 22/7 is a (slightly) better approximation for pi than 3.14. Plus, using diagonals is more common in dates.
For the good of the country in the world I hope it turns out to be more than 1/8.
OTOH catching up on the daily Trump reports I have to say he is the most newsertaining president we’ve ever had. We don’t have to listen a whole week of rehashing whatever bullshit story came out of the last press conference at the White House, there’s a new scandal every single day. And it’s got a real life Moose&Squirrel vs. Boris&Natasha storyline too. Unfortunately the Moose and Squirrel and this one are dumber than the cartoon characters and the Boris is going to get away with the Upsidasium and give it to Fearless Leader.
The other side of that coin is that almost everyone that Trump has appointed to a senior government position is an utterly unqualified buffoon from the legions of the far right whose only saving grace is that they’re too incompetent to do anything. But there is every chance that in the remaining 3 1/2 years some of them might figure out how to govern and start wreaking major damage, and this would be true even if Trump himself is impeached. You’re right, the best hope is a major Democratic shift in Congress in 2018.
They’ve released a horde of termites that are actively burrowing into the pillars and beams that hold up our entire executive branch. The edifice is stout enough that a bunch can be chewed away before there’s too much ominous creaking.
Then the whole mess gets wobbly and suddenly we look more like Russia or Greece where a small handful of tycoons owns the country’s economy *and *its government. At which point democracy is dead in fact if not in name and we’re all passengers on the tycoons’ bus to wherever is most profitable for them. Don’t complain in public; their police don’t like complainers.
Poor you if he is re-elected in 2020. Don’t say never as you all said that in April 2016.
Right now today I think is plausible that could be. The Dems stand for nothing that middle America wants. The middle wants a good economy, and it has improved recently. They want safety and security for themselves and their children and on that the general perception is that all the Dems support goes against both.
Bernie Sanders is embattled over his wife’s bank fraud problems and the evidence there is damning. Warren has the fake Indian Pocahontas problem. Hillary had her chance and wants another but she is sick and old and historically the Dems don’t give 2nd chances. All the rest are lightweights or outright moon bats.
As for the Russian and the election thing that has the potential to be vastly over played and to fail miserably. Not saying it will just that it may not play out as you wish.
Finally for all his faults, and I agree there are a number, Trump has 2 qualities I not see on the Dem side. He talks well to the middle and understands their issues now better than all the Dems combined. He also plays the media better than anyone I’ve seen in a long time. He plays the media and they not even know it they are so short sighted.
November 2020 is many political lifetimes away and all things will change from now to then. However to sit here and think it’s a given Trump is a 1 term President is just your desire and no more.
Sorry to be a burr to your wishful thinking this fine summer morning.
Actually, despite my being a devout Progressive, I think you’ve described the politics perfectly.
For whatever reason the Ds were asleep over the 30+ years it took for the Rs to steal the middle class from them. No matter how dreadful Trump might be as President, that won’t stop the middle class from voting R in 2020.
And, as you say, Trump is very skilled at telling his audience what they want to hear in the way they want to hear it. Whether it’s the truth or not is flat immaterial. Political speech is ever thus.
Trump’s no statesman. But he’s a hell of a showman and that, plus being allied with the correct party, may well be plenty to carry him through to 2024. Or beyond.
Come on guys. This is a simple thread in MPSIMS where we get to celebrate what I’ve been calling “1/8th day”. We have 17 bazillion threads discussing the politics of Trump, so I’d really appreciate it if we didn’t turn this into yet one more. I posted this in MPSIMS for a reason!!
Other than drinking to excess, what activities should we do on 1/8th, 1/4th, etc. day?
Visit Mexico? Eat McDonalds all day? Picket McDonalds all day?
We ought to be able to come up with some fun activities that are just relevant enough to be funny without triggering uncontrolled sobbing or neener-neenering from the crowd.
My first cut: everyone wear white makeup (anti fake tan) all day. Or fake tan as your allegiances may run.
