Once again, I’ll come to Keanu’s defence as an actor - he’s no Heath Ledger, I’ll grant you that, but he does a good job with his…limited abilities. He has a reputation for being wooden, but at least he never looks like he’s acting (Kate Mulgrew on Voyager is a good example of someone who always looks like she’s acting).
Agreed.
Plus, this should have nothing to do with it, but I have heard so many heartening stories about what he does in his private life. He just sounds like a good guy.
One thing I like about him is that I don’t hear about his private life - he seems to make a movie, disappear off the radar, and come back and make another movie. He’s one of the reasons I don’t feel very sorry for celebrities who complain about how hard it is to live in a fishbowl - he and other celebrities prove that if you don’t want your every move scrutinized, it is possible.
He didn’t seem wooden at all in The Gift. There are so many other truly bad actors (Martin Lawrence, Steve Carell, Tim Allen, Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, etc.) out there, it’s very easy for somebody like Keanu to seem not that bad.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll make fun of his acting like anyone else. He’s no Pacino. But my first impression of him was Ted, and he was awesome for that role. So my first impression of him was great, and most of the time, he entertains more than the annoys.
Mind you, I try and be selective about my movies. If something just looks stupid (Feeling Minnesota, anyone?) I wont bother to watch it so I don’t see him in terrible movies, therefore my impression of him remains good.
Plus, as others pointed out, he’s really low key and a cool guy. I’d hang out with him, maybe jam a little if he brought his bass over.
I rank an actors in their own element and playing to their own strengths. Leslie Nielsen isn’t a dramatic actor either, but he’s better at slapstick and site gag movies than Keanu is in dramatic films. Therefore, Nielsen is the better actor.
Apples are better than oranges, too. There, I did it.
Another fan of the Keanu man here. I’ve always liked him, and don’t think he’s a terrible actor.
It is strange that he’s the only actor I’ve ever defended in conversations…over, and over, and over. What I also wonder is if Keanu’s such a horrible, horrible actor, how does he continue, beyond fathomable reason, to be a box-office magnet? There are actors who are better looking, so don’t throw out that canard.
Yeah, he’s been in a few stinkers, and his ultra low-key attitude which, admittedly, infuses his work, probably rubs some the wrong way, but he’s had, and been the reason for, a few blockbusters as well, and has played roles he was absolutely perfect for, and perfect in.
I don’t know much about his personal life, and don’t want to. He seems like a decent guy, just living his life trying to do what he’s good at, which is to entertain people, and he does, and I appreciate him.
Sorry, I lost track of this thread. I agree, Onomatopoeia - there are many, many unbelievably attractive actors out there who haven’t had the phenomenal success that Keanu has. I think part of his acting abilities is to pick parts that are within his range. He is undeniably handsome (still tops my celebrity freebie list after many decades), but I think what he has that the camera adores is presence.
