Happy birthday, Mystery Science Theater 3000

Fifteen years ago today, one the greatest shows ever made was born. It was originally broadcast on Minneapolis’ KTMA-23 on Thanksgiving Day with two episodes. I’m sure no one involved with the show ever thought it would attain the cult status it enjoys today.

So hi-keeba to MSTies worldwide and a big thank you to Joel Hodgson and Jim Mallon.

Huzzah!

Trumpy! You do magic things!

I suggested to my girlfriend we revive the old Turkey Day marathon with the DVD sets we have. She was fine with it, except she won’t let me watch the Trumpy episode. How cruel is that?

i was 10 when this show premeired. weird.

I was 3 when it premiered. I think I’ll have my own Turkey Day marathon of it as well. I first discovered the joys of MST3K back when either Sci-Fi or Comedy Central decided to play a marathon of it… ahhh, the memories…

In 1993, I finally got divorced. The bad news was that the divorce agreement took away pretty much all my money for the first few months, leaving me with nothing to live on. I slept on my brother’s living room floor for four months (no picnic; I started dreaming about sleeping in a bed). I also had insomnia. At that time, Comedy Central was running all their MST3K episodes at midnight, and that’s when I got hooked on the show. I think it was “War of the Colossal Beast” that did it for me.

Ya know, I’ve been wondering how they eat and breathe, and other science facts.

Maybe I should just repeat to myself, “It’s just a show, I should really just relax.”

I was very unhappy when the SciFi channel stopped running MST3K, but, never fear, there are video stores that carry some of the eps, so I can rent one once in a while.

Do what I do…

All we need is a cake enscribed with, “Bite me, it’s fun!”

Ah… thyme…
Next you should have Joyce Carol Oates come and read from her first book in well over a month. And then, Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy can come to share their poignant stories of the joys and sorrows of being really, really, horribly old. And then… Topol…

Don’t forget Ms. Forrester’s turkey recipe: bake in a 200 degree oven for 25 minutes, then rub a turtle over it.

Tom: Tibby, I love you my fine little fella
Crow: Even though you gave the whole family Salmonella!
Do you realize a robot just sang a love song to a turtle?

LOST CONTINENT
“I lost my keys once but thats ridiculous!”

The greatest show ever. Happy birthday!

*We gather together
to watch cheesy movies
on Comedy Central
on Thanksgiving Day.

It’s Mystery Science
(breathe!)
Theater 3000
It’s thirty straight hours,
and it’s called Turkey Day.*

Ah, yes. Back in the days before South Park, when Penn Jillette was the voice-over man, when you could catch somebody doing a stand-up routine at some point every day and when Comedy Central was really funny.

<“Rocketship XM”> “Nyo, eyem Lloyd. ZAT’s i’mune!” <“Rocketship XM”>

“Joel, why would anyone do that with Mitchell?”

Keep circulating the tapes, kids.

Crow, Tom, gang, I’m proud to carry on your legacy.

Is it me, or has seeing a movie never been the same? Would we (I?) feel so free to mock movies in the theatre if not for this show?

Hi, Everyone! Let’s Pitch In ‘N’ Get Cracking Here In Louisiana Doing Right, Eh? Now Then: Hateful, Rich, Overbearing, Ugly Guys Hurt Royally Everytime Someone Eats A Radish, Carrot, Hors d’oeuvre, And Never Does Dishes. Eventually, Victor Eats Lunch Over Peoria Mit Ein Neuesberger Tod.

Prior to age 15, I may never have laughed as hard as I did the first 3 or 4 times - my brother kept hitting rewind - I heard the following:

“Normal view… normal view… normal VIEWWWW!!!”

“A very special, Joe Don Baker Chirstmas.”

Happy BD MST3k.

I just bought the 4th DVD pack this weekend…

Smoke Manmuscle!

Likewise, Tramp. I preordered it from Amazon and just got it yesterday. Thought I’d lose it seeing Mike do the three card Monte trick again before Hamlet…his accent is priceless.

New favorite line, uttered by Crow in Overdrawn At The Memory Bank: “And just what is the ‘it’ which is to him ‘up’ and which he can perhaps ‘handle?’”

Saturday mornings at 9AM on SciFi. Mmmmmmm… TiVo-tastic.
