Happy Birthday, Saskatchewan! (& Alberta too!)

Today’s the centennial of two of Canada’s provinces: Saskatchewan and Alberta, which both entered Confederation on September 1, 1905.

It’s been a wild ride over the past century - here’s to many more!

Are there any big celebrations planned? I think I recall HM popping over for a visit earlier in the year.

Happy Birthday, us!

It is extremely disconcerting to watch the local news, and have the newscasters all happily telling us about the 100th birthday celebrations, then have some New Orleans coverage. The festivities definitely feel a bit hollow.

Yes, HM unveiled a new statue of herself on her favourite horse, Burmese, which the Royal Canadian Mounted Police gave to her many years ago. (If you’ve seen pictures of her riding for the Trooping of the Colours, Burmese was normally her mount.)

Alberta had a big party today; Saskatchewan is celebrating on the upcoming long weekend.

Have fun.

Place must be run by a buncha commies, celebrating on Labour Day like that. :stuck_out_tongue:

There was apparently a video of the huge birthday cake getting lit up indoors and going horribly wrong here in Calgary - complete with firemen putting out the cake and everything. My husband says he saw it on Big Boys or Nearly Good or somewhere last week, but I can’t find it now - has anybody seen this? Got a link?

nose in the air Hmmmph.

I kid! I kid!

A very happy birthday to you, Saskatchewan and Alberta, and many more! pops champagne cork, sings aloud to the Arrogant Worm’s “Last Saskatchewan Pirate”

I saw it on the news. What a hoot! Worthy of Bob & Doug, and Red and his lodge brothers.

So much for Philip.

Oh, that’s too funny. And hardly anybody injured by the huge birthday cake, too - only a little smoke inhalation. (World record, indeed - best idea, poorly executed.)

Them was some nifty fireworks.

agreed - but coulda done without the sappy voice-over…

And even more important than the fireworks:

Riders 45 - Bombers 26

Can’t disagree there. A few bits of it I didn’t mind, but most of it was wince-inducingly trite. I was disappointed in the “custom” shells that were supposed to look like prairie lilies, too. Partly because I’m not even sure which ones they were. But, nitpicking aside, far and away the best display ever seen in Saskatoon.

I missed the game. Did they tauntingly mime banjo-picking again?

Nope - just called out “West - wooood” every time he came on. He missed one FG for a rouge. But oddly, neither side was trying for FGs. The first half, neither team got into range, and the second half both sides kept scoring TDs on their drives - truly, it was a Classic.

The ones that looked like hearts were very cool though.
