I always took it to mean he was hanging out the window, but I could easily miss the difference in German. The song feels dark; I used to see the video a lot, and it doesn’t really follow the song, although it is a dark video (in the video there are these somber looking Weihnachtsmaenner trying to get into a boy’s room while an elf helps him keep them at bay).
