Happy New Ear, Evil Captor!!

Yup, love him or hate him, Evil Captor has just left the hospital from having an earectomy (or splinectomy of you must be technical). There is an excellent chance that he will recover upwards of 80% of his hearing in the affected ear plus lose the tintinitis and vertigo.

He is still swoozy and yelling something about “Who ate all my Demerol?!?” but we believe he’ll sleep it off soon.

Best wishes, big guy!

As a Meniere’s sufferer, you’ve piqued my interest.

Evil Captor, let us know how the rehab’s goin’.

Hear’s to you, Evil Captor!

I hate that!

Great news, Evil Captor… Take care and good luck!

I can’t imagine the difficulties hearing loss and vertigo would cause an evil captor. Here’s hoping he’s up to no good soon!

Hope you’re back to world domination soon, Evil Captor!

Thanks for all the kind words, I do appreciate it.

I’m now sufficiently recovered from the surgery to sit upright and not feel too dizzy, though sudden head movements are definitely Not A Good Idea. I can also walk without too much dizziness. Earlier today, different story, but I seem to be recovering fast.

What happened to me was, the earbone that connects to the middle ear got ossified and stopped moving. Hence didn’t transmit sound at all. A hearing test revealed that although I couldn’t hear at all well through my ear, my hearing was about the same in both ears via bone conduction – indicating that the aural nerve is working just fine, and that the problem was that my earbone was frozen.

The surgery involved replacing the earbone with a cheap bit of plastic which WOULD move freely. It involved microsurgery and lasers, and it’s successful about 90 percent of the time.

I still have tinnitis, and my hearing hasn’t recovered, but typically it takes a couple of weeks for the hearing to be restored. What I was most afraid of was intense vertigo – I have had it before, and it’s really nightmarish – I was literally throwing up from it at times, and with no prospect of getting off the boat and getting better. It’s been years since it occurred, but I never want to go through THAT again.

That didn’t happen, so my biggest fear wasn’t realized. Even if my hearing doesn’t recover, I’ve dodged THAT bullet. I still feel physically tired from the surgery, but otherwise I’m OK.
