Happy Oz Straya day to everyone, regardless of where ya from, how long ya been here, who ya pray to, we’re all Aussies. Fire up the Barby, wave the flag around, sink some piss, sing out ozy ozy ozy, oi oi oi a lot and crank up the volume on the national anthem as done by Adam Hills.
That being said, I am always saddened by the way that Australia Day somehow gives the bigots and racists carte blanche to be even more vocal and revolting. It seems that as years go on, this media-fueled nationalistic fervour gets more and more toxic. Maybe I’m just noticing it more now thanks to things like Facebook and shit, but fuck it’s depressing.
To those of you who identify as Aussies, no matter where you came from, no matter your mastery of the English language and especially Aussie idioms, no matter what deity you hang your coat on each evening, may your Australia Day be safe, happy and may your future be the same. IOW, ignore the fuckheads.
that’s about the only song that can send a shiver down my spine and make me start to tear up at the same time. If there’s ever a referendum again, that’s my choice. (If we keep the current one, Adam Hills version rules)
