Today is the anniversary of the first time Thundercats was aired. Thundercats is officially 22 years old.
I can’t remember watching Thundercats as a kid, although I know I did. When it reaired on Cartoon Network there were episodes I remembered - Time Switch where Lion-o gets deaged to a little kid, Fond Memories with the evil Lion-o, bits of other things. Mask of the Gorgon still freaks me out. shiver That giant THING, that voice. Creepy.
In kindergarten and first grade my best friend and I would pretend to be the thunderkittens as we walked to school (in the snow, up hill both ways =^_^= ). She had the toys - I know she had the Thundertank and Lion-o. I don’t remember what else. She gave me a Thundercats belt that I still have.
We moved to California and I grew up and I still loved Thundercats. I started collecting the toys - first buying from dealers who severely overpriced (seriously Jaga for $40? What was I thinking?), then off eBay. I know I found it from Randy’s toy site (which is gone now). Actually it wasn’t eBay yet. I believe it was AuctionWeb or something like that.
Look at now. Somethings are better - we have DVDs, there’s a great community, the toys are relatively easy to find. Somethings are worse - insane dealers, lots of competition on every auction, all the retro & nostalgia crap clogging up eBay.
I’ve posted a bunch of my art in my livejournal, if anybody’s interested. (It’s in the post that looks exactly like this one, except this paragraph is art instead =^.^=) The link is in my sig.
So, go home. Watch Thundercats. Play with your toys. And remember the code of Thundera: Justice, Truth, Honor, Loyalty. Thundercats, HOOOO!!!
I remember the first Thundercats I saw. It was the premiere episode, and for some reason it was on in prime time. I remember thinking that it utterly, utterly rocked, and looked frantically for follow-up epsides. The first season–ending with Lion-O’s ascension to the the Lordship in fact as well as name – was magic, though if they’d been wise they would have stopped there.
Well, they could have a follow-up with Cheetara entering a torrid affair with the younger Warrior Maiden. But after that, nada.
I loved that show when I was a kid. We used to play Thundercats all the time, but there’s really only one female character so we had to take turns being Cheetara. Sigh.
There was also Mumm-rana (just don’t ask. It’s exactly what you think), Mandora, Chilla, and the absolute worse? Luna. There’s probably clips on youtube, but if you don’t already know what I’m talking about, you probably don’t want to.
… Actually I could probably name quite a few other female characters, but I’ll spare you.
It may be and it may not be. There’s a petition and there’s been a couple of scripts floated about the online community. There’s been talk of a new cartoon. There’s all sorts of rumors of stuff, but personally I’m not going to believe anything until it happens.
Also, why has this gotten more comments than when I posted it on eyeofthundera.net ? Is it because there are no pictures on this one? It’s killing me.
I remember hooking up my Lion-O to a nine volt battery and watching the laser beams shoot out of his eyes for the fraction of a second before he burned out. I had bought him at a garage sale for a quarter, and the seller had lost the power ring, so I didn’t care. Years later I found a power ring at another garage sale, along with a Mumm-Ra, and regretted frying Lion-O’s brain like that.
Did anyone see the movie Juno? I was amused that when she started going into labor, she yelled out “Thundercats are go!”, a misremembering of two pop culture catch-phrases.
