I already did in the second paragraph of my previous post
Last I heard, Cruz was singing for the Dead Kennedys.
That’s okay; it seems that on the SDMB, overinclusiveness is par for the course when list threads are involved
For instance, the “What book are you currently reading?” threads always turn into “What books are you currently reading, what books did you just finish reading, and what books do you plan on reading soon?”
I bet that if someone worded a list thread title in just the right way, the responses would amount to immensely detailed biographies of each of the posters.
IIRC, Minor Threat pretty much defined a major sub-genre of American punk, i.e. DC straight-edge, and for that reason alone they deserve a listen. The more important reason is that the are more-or-less the best punk band ever. They have the anger, the speed, the catchy tunes, the social conscience, and the tone of what punk, IMO, is supposed to be. I recall when I bought the Red Album in highschool, '86 IIRC, and put it on the turntable. I hadn’t heard much punk until then and the first riff spoke to me: It said, “THIS is what music is supposed to be.” To say that my taste has changed over time would not be an understatement; yet, that album remains one I really enjoy turning back to after all these years. FYI: I bought a CD of their stuff and it cut off the ends of all the songs. If you get a CD that sounds like that, don’t blame the band.
Another great band is The Exploited. They’re still around. I saw them in '87 after their ban from coming into the U.S. had just expired. Listen to their album “Horror Epics” as well as the “Jesus is Dead E.P.”–specifically the song “Politicians”.
The Meatmen outta Detroit, IIRC, are another good band. Look for the album with “Tooling for Anus” on it. “War of the Superbikes” is another good one by them. Really good, in fact.
Those are my three suggestions; though I will add this: “One Big Happy Slam Pit”. It’s a compiliation album.
Happy listening. PLEASE report back and tell us what you listened to and what you thought!!
i also saw the exploited, but it was in 91. they put on a sweet show but wouldnt play fuck the usa no matter how hard we begged…wonder why? wattie was sort of a prick though…
Minor Threat was a great punk band (and in my opinion, definitely a hardcore band ), and I recommend any punk fans who haven’t heard their stuff to buy their discography. You won’t be disappointed.
You might also want to check out Naked Raygun-awesome band from Chicago. They were active in the 80’s, and most of their cds have been reissued recently.
…any NYC boys(or girls) remember TOKEN ENTRY?..TImmy Chunks was an incredible force in front …I think a few later formed BLACK TRAIN JACK…anyway Timmy headed up .http://www.chunksaah.com/news.html and helped out with the BOUNCING SOULS(NJ’s FINEST)…good times …god I feel old
Too funny! I was just thinking about Black Train Jack yesterday. I found an old cd single of “this is the way”. I wish I had that full length. They were a great band. I was never big on Token Entry but being from the New Brunswick NJ area I attended bakyard bashes at the bouncing sould house and was at the release of their first cd on Chunsaah. I think it was called the green ball EP. The Souls actually sounded like a RHCP rip off band for a looong time. They are a great band now.
