Story here. Sounds like a good time was had by all.
I take exception to the reference to “Nana – the city’s sex district,” but I can understand the mistake. There is a Nana Skytrain Station right there, and around the corner is Nana Plaza, a three-story bar area, and there are two lanes named Nana North and Nana South. But the entire area is not called the Nana area, nor have I heard it referred to as such. Certainly not the stretch on Sukhumvit Road with the the streetwalkers, and certainly not Soi 5, which is the location of Gulliver’s. “Lower Sukhumvit” it’s called if anything. And there are several other “sex districts” in town. But it’s only a tiny error, and the article is a fun account.
Very interesting article-- thanks!
I live off of Nana North, and I’ve never even been onto Nana South (where all the sex clubs are). We do get some of that trade up here, though-- there is an hourly hotel on either side of us, and a rather upscale brothel around the corner!
But I have always felt very safe on the streets here (aside from dodging traffic, that is) and I feel that things in this neighborhood are generally discreet. There’s always something going on, and a lot of interesting restaurants. I would prefer a few more trees, though…
Well, the bars in Nana Plaza are not exactly “sex clubs,” but I know what you mean. Nana Plaza used to be a very fun place to hang out, but the price of a beer in most places there has become outrageous! They’ve definitely begun targeting a more Japanese clientele, with both the prices and the Japanese manner in which many of the bargirls try to make themselves up to look like.
The local expats go more for Soi Cowboy, but even the drink prices there are climbing too high. Many of us find ourselves returning to Patpong. Most bars there are Thai-owned, and it seems like the Thai-owned places tend to have lower prices. All part of the cycle. Nana Plaza will no doubt become popular again in a few years’ time.
