Harris VP choice as she is the official presidential nominee of the Democratic Party for 2024

There are no odds on favourites at the moment. Josh Shapiro is the favourite at Betfair, but not odds on.

A lot depends on what kind of campaign Harris wants to run. If she’s planning to be tougher on Israel than Biden was (which I hope she is), a Jewish VP candidate might be just the thing to provide political cover. I give you Sen. Brian Schatz of Hawaii, who checks the SWM box and has called for the US to halt weapons shipments to Israel.

Moderating: Question is answered, no more posts on the Gambling now.

I’m still in favor of Kelly over anyone else. He has all upsides as far as I can tell.

I think Mark Kelly would also be my first choice, but there are several others that would make me happy too.

Also “Harris/Kelly” just sounds better than “Harris/Beshear.”

Steve Bullock, 58 years old
Former governor of Montana
True moderate who was able to pull some rural counties over to his side (e.g. rather than winning through a successful get-out-the-vote, purely in the cities).

Supports campaign finance reform, to get money out of politics.

I agree – and (from a marketing POV) think it may actually matter.

Man, you’re not kidding. Someone get that guy an eyebrow trimmer, as least!

Hadn’t thought of that but yeah Be shearing your hairs is memes waiting to be made. And Trump’s ear being nicked already makes for bad fodder …

Just campaigning against Trump is not sufficient. The Dems have been trying to dunk on Trump non-stop for the past 8 years. It hasn’t really accomplished anything. To win this election the Democrats need to sell the idea of a Democratic movement to voters, they need to sell the Democratic policies that are going to, and that already have, improved the lives of Americans. The fact that Raskin or whoever is capable of explaining just why Donald Trump is so bad, is not an asset here. It would actually be a waste of time and energy.

I agree. Necessary but not sufficient. Raskin can do all the other stuff too. I’d still give the edge to Kelly.

["Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” he said.]

Pretty much dooms Pete as a selection in my view. That soundbite will be the albatross that hangs around his neck for the rest of his political career.

That was Beto O’Rourke.

I would be happy with Whitmer or Beshear. I don’t like Newsom either way, but I’d note that Harris and Newsom are both (currently) California residents, and that would create some 12th Amendment complications.

A Harris-Newsom presidential ticket? There’s one big legal hurdle: The 12th Amendment (yahoo.com)

I feel like Mayor Pete adds nothing to the ticket.

The 4 I like so far:

  • Gretchen Whitmer, is a two woman ticket a problem? But would hopefully deliver Michigan and not hurt in Penn.
  • Mark Kelly, not a lot of name recognition I think.
  • Josh Shapiro, might deliver Penn while losing Michigan due to Gaza.
  • Roy Cooper, can he deliver NC, but not a lot of name recognition I think. Also for me a little old. Under 62 would be best so chance of running in 8 years while under 70.

And aside from that, an all-Cally ticket would be a very hard national sell.

Very true, dat.

Oh, Mark Kelly is also interesting, and I’d love to see him debate Vance. I’m less familiar with him, though.

I get what folks are saying on this subject, but Shapiro is a heck of a speaker.

Fwiw, Vance has said he ain’t debatin’ nobody.
