Harris VP choice as she is the official presidential nominee of the Democratic Party for 2024

How soon do we think the announcement will be made? I actually have three I could go with.

From the post which @Hari_Seldon made a few hours ago, it sounds like the DNC has placed a deadline of 6pm ET on this upcoming Saturday for candidates to submit names for consideration. I’m guessing that’s for the Presidential nomination, but it might also be for the VP nomination.

I don’t believe that Whitmer is really out.

Sure, picking a white dude is safe. But picking Whitmer would be a total flex. A blaring announcement of total confidence. It would massively fuck with the fascists’ heads and utterly demoralize them. Biden’s departure and endorsement of Harris has already gotten us 80% there, IMO. That was flex, so why not have flex on flex?

Plus, Whitmer would put a lock on Michigan. That’s incredibly valuable in its own right.

To get this out of the way, so I’m not misunderstood: I would be thrilled with a Harris / Whitmer administration.

But I think people are underestimating the effect of two women on the ticket, an illogical, emotional effect. Sure, the “I won’t vote for any woman, no how” tribe are out whether it’s one or two. But there are people—misguided but otherwise “gettable” people—who think two women would be one too many. A man to calm down any possible emotional lapses (or whatever garbage they envision) would make it more palatable.

I have only my experience to base this on, so grain of salt and all that. But let’s not overreach. This isn’t about making history, or making a flex, or anything other than beating Trump. Yes, there’s a danger in being too cautious. But let’s not push the envelope too much in our exuberance.

As excited as I am for our chances, I am in an almost-constant state of anxiety these days, so maybe it’s the terror talking.

Again, she is out. So is Michelle. And the other Obama.

Many other nations “Presidents” are unimportant figureheads, the real power is in the Prime Minister.

She’s been in training for this moment for 3 1⁄2 years.

Every Veep knows that they have to be ready, at any time, day or night, for the phone call:

“President is down. You’re up.”

Sure, there’s not the tragedy of a dead president, and he’s going to finish out his term.

Call it “presidential succession lite”.

But she’s been thinking about it for 3 1⁄2 years.

Well, Whitmer’s submitted vetting materials to the Harris campaign, so it sounds like she’s “out” the same way Biden was “in”. Therefore, I think it’s within bounds to discuss her viability as a running mate

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Tuesday refuted reports that Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign has requested materials to vet her as a potential running mate. … Whitmer said she does not plan to cut short her second term as Michigan’s Governor which ends Jan. 1, 2027. “I am not interested in doing other than this job for the next two and a half years,” she told reporters after signing [Michigan’s education budget]…“I’ve not been asked for anything,” Whitmer said. She hasn’t “sent any documentation to anyone” either, she added, calling reports about the vetting process "inaccurate.

Yeah, this would be a bad choice.

Well that’s new news to me. But I do tend to take politician public denials with a grain of salt. I can’t help but think if Harris really wanted Whitmer, Whitmer’s denials would go out the window pretty quick. I’m not a fan of whitmer joining the ticket, but I don’t see why her strengths and weaknesses can’t still be discussed here.

If the best option is a woman then she should choose a woman. If it’s a man, she should choose a man. If it’s a they, then so be that, too.

But it should be Bullock.

How many times have you mentioned this guy in various threads? Are you his Mom or something?

No matter how hard you try, you’re not going to make fetch, I mean Bullock, happen.

In case anyone had momentarily forgotten that Mark Kelly was an astronaut:

This dude flew a damn space shuttle! From space!

If he’s veep, we’ll have someone in the White House who can lead the aerial assault on the aliens when they attack.

Mark Kelly!

Canada has twice had the top three being women:

  1. QEII since forever.

  2. Governor General: Adrienne Clarkson (1999-2005); Michaëlle Jean (2005-2010)

  3. Administrator of Canada: Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin (2000-2017)

It’s only after that you get down to the PM.

As of next week Iceland will have a female president and prime minister. They don’t have a vice-president.

So you’re saying he has experience with two borders. Kamala should also put him in charge of Space Force.

Strange that the “clean up campaigning” guy is the new Voldemort.

In the UK, the position of Deputy Prime Minister doesn’t mean much. But under Liz Truss, it was a woman - Thérèse Coffey. Coffey wasn’t popular, but no one thought it an issue that both roles were held by women.

Sure, but in that case she has the job, she isn’t running for it. If Biden passes away tomorrow, then you’re right.

And Bullock can be the new AG if she wins.

As far as a debate vs. Trump: why? What does she have to gain? Go talk to people at rallies and such.

To show how much more she is capable than Trump, in a controlled setting.

Rallies are not the only form of campaigning, though Trump and the MAGAts think they are. Remember, in 2020, Trump’s fans criticized Biden for not holding rallies. Trump’s rallies are full of Trump supporters, who eat up everything he says, and applaud it. Frankly, I don’t think that Trump knows how to campaign, except to hold rallies.

It seems to me that Harris is more subtle. She’d rather meet with regular, everyday Americans at a union hall, at an American Legion, at a community centre. Contrast that to Trump, who doesn’t seem to want to mix with regular, everyday Americans anywhere. At a Trump rally, he’s on the podium, they’re out there, and he speaks to them from afar. Harris seems to want to meet and speak with ordinary, everyday Americans in places other than arenas and stadiums, places where they may be more comfortable, in a one-on-one.

There is more to campaigning than rallies. There is talking to real people, which Trump seems to be unable to do. Harris seems to be able to. I think that ability to do that will make a lot of undecideds think twice.
