They all think Israel should exist, and should be a safe place for Jews, and has the right to defend itself. That qualifies as “Zionist” for many (including myself). IMO it’s not at all in conflict with being pro-Palestinian and pro-two-state-solution (in fact, IMO, such stances are necessary for Zionism – Israel will never be a safe place for Jews unless and until long-term peace is made with Palestinians, which requires guaranteeing their human rights).
My point is that substantively, there’s no real difference in views on Israel from the various VP candidates, at least AFAICT from public statements. Some will jump on Shapiro’s statements about protesters – but if a voter can support a Zionist VP candidate, then IMO that voter is gettable, even with Shapiro on the ticket. The risk that a few may fall off because of those statements may be low enough to be overcome by the positives Shapiro brings (i.e. helping in all-important PA). That’s almost certainly the kind of calculation Harris is considering.
Yeah, I don’t know what Beshear brings to the table that’s special. Of course, just being considered is an honor (I’m not being snarky, I’d be flattered to be on the list).
He won a second term in a rural red state defending reproductive rights and brought the state into Medicaid expansion.
He knows how to reach voters on the other side. He focuses the conversation on two issues Harris wants the focus on. He provides demographic and geographic balance.
I was thinking more like a press conference where a high school athlete picks his college by putting on a cap with the logo of the ‘winning’ school. Kamala will have six caps in front of her and pick the winner.
With openings at senate and governor I was a bit surprised Shapiro went for governor. I would have thought senator would be a better fit for Shapiro. Fetterman seemed logical for governor as he was lt governor.
Then I realized Shapiro wants to try for president, governor is the better path for that. Fetterman is very happy to be senator, he doesn’t seem to want to go further. Senator is his spot.
Should Shapiro want to make a run for president he should stay as governor. His chances are better going from gov to pres rather than vice to pres.
