Your “revolution” is over, Mr. Trump! Condolences! The bums will lose! My advice to you is, to do what your parents did! Get a job, sir! The bums will always lose-- do you hear me, Trump? …THE BUMS WILL ALWAYS LOSE!
That’s a good video, but not the one I’m thinking of. I don’t think CNN uploaded video of the quick-hit appearance he made the evening of Monday, July 22nd. Walz was not speaking on Jake Tapper’s afternoon program on the 22nd, but later into the evening with one of CNN’s female anchors.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who is chair of the DNC Rules Committee, told CNN’s Erin Burnett on “OutFront” that the idea boils down to: “Anybody’s welcome to come in.”
“It is an open process; anyone is welcome,” Walz said. “The delegates who were selected will cast their vote as they see fit, and we will come out with a nominee in time” to get on the ballot in all 50 states, said the governor, who has endorsed Harris.
I think the odds are far lower. I’m fairly certain that the Trump campaign realizes that Vance has a serious issue with saying stupid, controversial things, and in articulating his views in a way that isn’t putting his own foot into his mouth. He’s not a polished speaker, and I don’t think he’s quick on his feet (which you must be to succeed in a live debate). They had not previously agreed to a VP debate, and I have a hard time seeing what they think they would have to gain by exposing Vance to one.
I think that might be his biggest strength. It gives the other white guys who are steeped in the propaganda a legitimate excuse to stop and ask, “Really? Are they really commie monsters who are deliberately trying to destroy America? Maybe raising the minimum wage and improving health care aren’t all that bad, after all.”
Noted leftist Joe Manchin is enthusiastically praising Walz’ selection as VP. Per the Washington Post:
Manchin called Walz “the real deal,” saying in a statement that Harris’s pick “will bring normality back to the most chaotic political environment that most of us have ever seen.”
“I can think of no one better than Governor Walz to help bring our country closer together and bring balance back to the Democratic Party,” Manchin added.
I’m with you. At best, I’d put the odds of a VP debate happening at a coin flip.
Some people might expect it, but besides the downsides of having Vance attempt to emulate normal hyoo-man behavior for a couple hours, Trump doesn’t like having attention pulled away from him.
By contrast, having a VP candidate like Walz act not as a lickspittle toady but as a complementary part of a leadership team would work to the benefit of that campaign and be even worse by comparison.
I.e. “It’s not about the issues, he fits the image of somebody I can sell to the fine, absolutely not racist or sexist citizens of West Virginia”
Likewise for AOC. Nevermind the rest of the country just being able to choose someone both ends of the Democratic party can be enthusiastic about is reason to celebrate
BURNETT: All right. So, Governor, right now I want to get as promised back to the conversation you had with the vice president yesterday. Did [Harris] ask you directly for your support and did she discuss the VP process with you? Obviously, you know, many are sure that you’re on a pretty short list.
WALZ: Well, no, she did not mention that. What she did is she said, I’m going to earn this, Governor. We’ve worked together. I’m really proud because not too long ago, she became the first vice president or president who stood in a Planned Parenthood clinic with me in St. Paul.
Same here. Apart from anything else of Trump doesn’t debate there is a zero percent chance he’ll let Vance debate and potentially up stage him (I mean he’ll likely have a nightmare debate but I’m sure it’s upstaging him that Trump would worry about). And there is definitely less than 90% chance Trump will debate
That’s kind of typical for VP candidates, though. And in fact, for many Presidential candidates. Any governor or senator is a plausible pick for either office, and nobody knows all 150 of them.
As for “letting Minneapolis burn”, if he were truly left-wing, he would have started by firing the group that was going around slashing tires. Yes, I said “fired”, not “arrested”, because that group was… the Minneapolis Police Department.
I think he is authentic and that is the most important quality in any candidate. He’s also extremely personable and relatable to every day Americans, in a way that Harris might not be - or he at least compliments her/the ticket very nicely.
So all good. Very happy with the pick. Let’s get it on!
Re: early attack angles - all I can say is, if that is the best they’ve got, that proves Harris made a good choice.
I agree WRT Kaine. Everything about him seemed forgettable. Whereas Walz actually has a personality.
Possibly off topic, but related to above discussion of his liberal policies. I tend to think of myself as quite liberal on most issues (tho folk around here regularly prove otherwise!) And I generally tend to support increased social services to the least fortunate. But in my job I occasionally encounter cases from Minn, in which disadvantaged people are receiving social services, and I find myself thinking, “Really? Isn’t that a little excessive?” But, I realize it is better to provide too much than too little.
Also (I think?) a callback to Kristi Noem, governor from a state not that far from Minnesota, who thought it might actually be a good way to show off her VP bona fides. That seems like a decade ago now.
Those folks really are weird. Somebody like Walz who seems like he’s not just emulating actual human emotion seems odd by comparison.
I saw something that pointed out a major counterpoint to this.
Basically, the county prosecutors were in the pocket of police and didn’t want to go after the cops, and Walz was instrumental in having them removed and the case reassigned to the state attorney general, which resulted in conviction. That’s pretty major.
So I’ve been looking intro Walz’ wife and family. They have been married for 30 years and have 2 kids, Hope 23 and Gus 17. They have apparently been open about using IVF to conceive. She was formerly an English teacher whose mother was the first in her family to graduate High Scool. As First Lady of Minnesota, she took on the issue of prison education. The dog is named Scout. Also, on their anniversary he tweets out pictures of them along with the message that she is the best thing to ever happen to him. They are disgustingly wholesome. I hope there aren’t some scary skeletons yet to be uncovered.
