Harry Potter Cartoon/comics (possible spoiler)

While patiently waiting for the next movie to be released, I found Severus Snape - Lily Evansdrawings/anime/manga via the glorious thingie that is youtube.

And it made me wonder just why there hasn’t been some kind of spinoff into the comic book world on this series. I suspect it would be hotter than a supernova, but out of Rowlings storyline control.

I am not completely certain what the difference is between anime and manga, I just know they are Japanese origins.

I suspect that’s it. JKR seems to want to keep very tight control over her creation. Anything other than a straight comic adaptation of the novels (or movies) would be creating new material in that universe, and she doesn’t appear to have any interest in letting anyone else do that.

Similarly, my understanding is that she has no interest in licensing a Harry Potter role-playing game. I don’t know if that stems for not wanting to allow others to create in her universe, or a dislike for role-playing games, or whatever.

I’m no expert, but my understanding is that anime is animated cartoons, while manga are non-animated comics / comic books.

I’m still sad that they decided to make the Potter story into films instead of a Tv serial, which, as basically a set of boarding school-mystery stories, it was far more suited for.

I don’t see the appeal of a comic version at all though. Comic books are often just as rushed as films in a way, in terms of their inability to spend time on the cute little notes that make the books so entertaining and engaging.

You probably saw the story today that JKR refuses to give permission to release an electronic book of HP. She’s expressed a preference for books on paper.
If she won’t let her words be published in an e-book you might imagine her take on a comic book version.

Can’t say as I blame her for retaining close control of a billion dollar empire.

I can’t fault her this one bit, but over the years as I have read and re-read the series, all I could think is " this would be a a great comic book" or even a chapter book of different adventures within that year.
