I saw the movie when it first came out. Months later (last week), I decided to read the books. Well, I have decided that they are evil, but not in the same way that I have been hearing.
“It promotes witchcraft.”
Well, they said about “Bewitched” and I only tried to get something by wrinkling my nose when we played “pretend.”
“It teaches disobedience.”
No, for the most part, when the kids did bad, they were punished for it. And honestly, exactly how many “mama’s perfect little angels” are actually out there that have never had to be punished for being bad? I could be an absolute brat, and this was years before HP.
No, the reason that Harry Potter books are evil is that I did almost nothing useful this weekend while reading them. Got very little done, except go to the store to get Harry Potter books. And I’m not a kid! Embarrassing! I tell someone I read a HP book, and they grin and say, “Isn’t that a kid’s book?” Well, yeah, but I liked it! So, not only did I have a useless weekend, but it was spent reading kids’ books! Even more embarrassing, I find myself anxiously awaiting July 31, when the latest book goes into paperback! Argh!!! Evil, evil, evil!
I read two Potter books in a weekend, too. Someone had better spank me like the bad girl I am before I read again!
Anyhoo, as to the OP- I agree. The hooha over Harry Potter was just silly. The books are excellent fantasy and I loved them (and I’m an adult). Speaking of excellent fantasy…hmmmm

Thank you, Angua, I felt the same way. The books don’t read like they are at a “lesser level” by any means, and I enjoy them. But, they are like an addiction, so I have to say they are. . . “bewitching.” Evil, I tell you, evil!
You know apparently they’re not kids books. Apparently JKR wrote them for herself originaly and didn’t have kids in mind.
HP got me ‘into’ reading and even interested in writing (something which I am tempted to post about - completet and utter lack of inspiration). After reading the HP books I read quite a few ‘grown up’ books. (I am currenlty halfway through High Fidelity) When I picked up a HP book after reading the grown up books it stood out just how simplistic and child-book-ish the ‘language’ was! So I guess they can’t escape their ‘children’s books’ status. But It won’t stop me from climbing on perfect strangers in a crazed rush to grab book 5 and throw a wad of tenners at the shopkeeper.
JKR get your finger out of your arse and bloody finish book 5!
It actually wouldn’t surprise me if there were a 5 and the publicists were just waiting for the most profitable timing.
On a separate note, can anyone tell me about the lawsuit that she recently went through? I know that someone said she plagiarized, and it was settled out of court, but I wondered if this was a crackpot or someone she collaberated with and then later had a falling out with. Does anyone know?
I don’t understand people who will sit there and say that Harry potter is evil, but will let thier kids watch almost any disney movie, or tell them stories like cinderella or the little mermaid. It all appears to be pretty freaking magical to me folks.
