Was curious about this. Browsing back through the archives, I see that all manner of misfortune has befallen Dopers on the board, and they (or their next of kin ) have shared the news. (All sorts of happy events as well, of course).
Has there ever been a case where someone posted “yo, this is Username’s roommate posting under his handle, just to let y’all know the fuzz picked him up this morning for running a bearbaiting operation, direct all future inquiries to this e-mail address”.
Don’t want to open any old wounds, of course, but I was sort of morbidly curious.
There are Dopers who have been to prison: see the Ask The Former Prisoner thread. I don’t know of any who were Dopers first and then prisoners. But there are Dopers who have stopped posting without telling us why. (If something were to happen to me, there’s no one else who would know to come here and explain why I wasn’t around anymore. I’ll try not to rob any liquor stores, but if I do somehow end up in prison, the Dope probably won’t hear about it.)
I remember at least one poster who took a break from the Boards to serve a sentence in jail, but frankly I’m not sure that any poster that might be an answer to the OP would necessarily appreciate the rest of us bringing it back up.
Sure, if the guy’s a personal friend of yours who asked you not to reveal his secrets on the internet, that’s one thing. But this person posted about the issue on these boards, for anyone to see, and the discussion about it is part of the board database, and can be found using the search function.
If you can’t help the OP, then don’t, but i think it’s pretty lame to come in and say “I can help you with you query, but i won’t because some guy i don’t know would probably prefer it that way.”
I don’t remember the username, or i’d search and post it myself.
I SWEAR a certain poster (who seems to have disappeared around 2002, anyway) took a short break from the boards for this reason, but looking at his/her old posts I can’t find mention of it and I’m starting to think I’m going crazy.
Jodi, Baker, did the poster(s) you have in mind have a non-alphanumeric character in their username?
Aesiron. Since he posted openly about it, I have no reservations about posting it. If it were something said in confidence, that would be another matter entirely. As far as I’m concerned, anyone’s public posts are fair game; including mine.
I very seriously doubt they’re referring to me since that’s the only time I’ve ever mentioned it on the board and it’s only been in the past month or two that I’ve even been all that active again, so no one would have noticed me not being around for a week.
It was TN*Hippie and he didn’t seem at all shy about posting about his likely impending jail time. I don’t know for sure if he did go, but he did stop posting pretty abruptly.
Your opinion of my lameness will be given the consideration it deserves.
Good thing for him you don’t remember it, then, huh?
ETA: For my part, I think it’s pretty lame to imagine that everything each of us has ever said on this message board, whether drunk or angry or young or whatever, we therefore would necessary appreciate having brought back up years later. Is it all technically “fair game” because we posted it in public in the first place? Sure, but that doesn’t mean it’s kind to revive things the OP’er might prefer to be forgotten. I’m not saying every person even necessarily wants “shit, I’m going to jail!” to be forgotten, or cares either way, but ISTM pretty reasonable that some people might.
I didn’t have a particular poster in mind, just agree with the idea that if a Doper has been in prison they may want it forgotten, if it was known, or not revealed, if it wasn’t. I do know a former poster who almost went to prison, so maybe that was coloring my attitude. But without that poster’s permission(if they had gone), I’d never post about it.
For what it’s worth, as someone who actually just had his incarceration brought up, I don’t care, though I will admit to it being a surprise to see my name on a scroll through of this thread. If I’d wanted to keep it quiet, I’d’ve never posted about it publically in the first place and don’t see a problem with past history being brought up so long as it isn’t done so for the express purpose of badgerment.
