I’m considering changing my major out of engineering. It’s good stuff and all, but sometimes I think I’m not doing so hot at it and I might be happier in the long run with something else.
I’ve been considering studying Entomology. You know, bugs and such. Are there significant career opportunities in this field, and would I definately have to get a Master’s or PhD to do much with it? I’m just trying to determine if I can make a reasonable living off of and find a job in the field.
If you have any thoughts or information on this field (or any related biology or agricultural field) that would be good for me to know, post them. Thanks.
BA/BS in biology = lab tech. You either work for a basic research lab or in industry. Industry pays more, but is a LOT more boring. Basic research is more interesting but the pay is shit.
Master’s degrees: Waste of time and money. No master’s program gives you a living stipend or a tuition waiver. So you’ve got to figure out a way to come up with the money for living expenses and tuition. On the plus side, it’ll take around 1 year if you’re reasonably good.
The major problem is: With a Master’s degree you’re STILL a lab tech. The only difference is with the extra education you’re more expensive and thus harder to hire.
To really accomplish anything BY YOURSELF you need a PhD and your own lab.
