So here’s the deal. I love Simon and Garfunkel to death. I’m not big on their history, but I do basically know that Garfunkel was riding Simon’s coattails pretty much the entire time. However, I would totally be down with an evening of Garfunkel playing their greatest hits for an hour or so. On the other hand, an hour of Garfunkel’s solo work would be an infinite hell. Has anyone been to one of his shows? What do you think?
I’ve never went to an Art Garfunkel concert, but I did attend The Concert in Central Park in '81. It was fantastic, despite the rain!
I’m also a huge S&G fan. I don’t hold much respect for Paul Simon, as he’s just a nasty little man. I feel like Art Garfunkel made the duo, in my opinion. His voice was wonderful! Sure, Simon wrote the music, and all, but it was Artie’s voice that made it music, in my opinion. Their voices, together, really were wonderful.
Artie’s voice isn’t what it used to be, but I’d still go to one of his concerts, if I had the chance!
The best way to see them is together, unfortunately. I saw them on the Old Friends tour in 2003 and it was great. The whole show was wonderful, and I loved hearing all the songs I’d heard over and over as a child (I was a junior in high school in 2003 - so recordings of them were basically played throughout my entire childhood).
In early 2007, I saw Art Garfunkel at Ohio University. It was a good concert, but not nearly as good as the one in 2003. He did a large amount of his solo work, and was a good character on stage - telling stories, joking, etc. - but it was clear that the audience was also there to hear the greatest hits that they knew were coming. He did do some of them, actually, a decent number of them, and that was when the auditorium really came alive with each word that was sung. I would say it wasn’t as good as the Old Friends tour, but it was a good show that I really enjoyed. The entire night was a bit hectic, but again, enjoyable.
I will say this: if you get the chance, go to the concert. Even if you aren’t sure: go. This is something I’ve said over and over in my life, but you never know when someone is going to be completely retired. This was why I decided to drive hours and hours to see Dylan when I was 16. It is why my wife and I saw Willie Nelson when we had a pick of concerts in a summer concert series for free. Especially legendary musicians - it makes sense to go.
On the other hand, we had bought tickets to a show with two comedians, one we knew and one we didn’t. The one we knew backed out. Ticketmaster offered a refund and we took it. Later, we found out who Mitch Hedberg was, and loved his comedy, but we never got to see him live before he died. If we would have taken the shot and gone, the most we would have been out was about $50 total. Kind of sucks, looking back.
I’ll take issue with that. Simon was the songwriter, but Garfunkel had the better voice and made a lot of uncredited contributions to the arrangements.
I’ve never seen him in concert myself, but online set lists suggest that he’s currently doing a mix of about half S&G classics and half solo/cover songs.
You’d never convince this fan of that. He invited her on stage and gave her his guitar to play Lincoln Duncan, after she called out that it was the first song she ever learned on guitar. What a thrill for her.
It is an uncommonly known fact that absolutely nobody ever has been to an Art Garfunkel show.
I went to one in 1998. It was for Israel’s 50th anniversary and it was up here in Evanston or Skokie. I honestly don’t remember much of it. I had to photograph it for the paper and he had rather strict photography rules for the time (only the first song, as opposed to the usual three, and he did not seem to be happy at all to have any photographers there. I suppose I understand, but, to be candid, I kind of felt like he should be happy anyone still gave a shit. And I’m quite fond of Simon & Garfunkel’s work.)
I saw him in Madison, WI in the 70s and he was great.
I saw him in 94 & thought it was an awesome concert.
(I’d give my left arm to see 'em both together though)
If you are in DC on 24 MAY and have $65 you can see him…
Isn’t that what the OP was asking?
