Has anyone ever had an ugli?

The title says it all. I bought an ugli at the store because it was, well, kind of ugly: a lumpy yellow/green citrus fruit. But, it’s quite delicious. Anyone else try one?

I’ve tried them a couple of times and was very underwhelmed. Very juicy-- almost watery-- with very little flavor. Did I get a couple of bad ones in a row?

Or did I just get one unusually good one?

I’ve had em. They live somewhere on the grapefruity side of the orange->grapefruit continuum.
At two bucks a pop, I’ll stick with the more familiar fruit.

I had one. Not hugely impressed. I prefer regular grapefruit for the price.

I’ve had them a few times. Bland is the right word. An only slightly bitter but very watery grapefruit sums up the taste quite well.

I only know of them because of crossword puzzles. I’ve never seen one in real life.

I lurrves me some Ugli - er, I mean Uniq - fruit. I love the taste combo of peach/tangerine and grapefruit. Big, juicy, easy to peel, sweet with tart overtones. The ones I had in the 80s and early 90s were seedless, which made for wonderfully easy eating. For some reason the ones I get now have seeds, not as easy but still good IMO.

The fruit looks like a cross between a grapefruit, a shar pei puppy, and a moss-covered sloth. What’s not to love? One of these days I’ll make candied Ugli peel for ChrismaChanaKwanzSolstice. Then I’ll decide if it’s a treat for the naughty or nice.

Ugli fruit is about twice as expensive as grapefruit around here (Northern Virginia). That makes it an occasional treat, but one of my favorites.

Another great thing about liking Ugli fruit. At my first real life meeting of Mama Zappa’s e-pal from Jamaica I could tell her that my favorite agricultural export comes from there.

Darn things are ugly as sin. - and not the fun sins like in certain active NSFW threads in this board, just ordinary sins like your parents “doin’ it” kind of ugly.

Never tried an ugli. Must…refrain…from…joke…about…bumping…

On a similar note, though, I tried a horned melon this week. I loved it. It was visually stunning, and it tasted kind of like a cross between a kiwifruit and a lime, but more mild than either. Then I poked around the internet and found several “reviews” that gave 'em a thumbs down. Eh, people have no taste.

(They were also on the “reduced for quick sale” rack, and so were $.99 for three, instead of $4 each like in that article. Ay yi yi.)

I tried one. Like the majority opinion in this thread, I was underwhelmed.

I like 'em, but they’re expensive and seldom seen here.
