Has anyone taken the Praxis?

The one for prospective-teachers and teachers? I’m taking the Praxis 1 in about three weeks - it’s math, writing, and reading comprehension.

I’m fairly good at anything involving reading comprehension and writing. I took the LSAT four years ago and scored above-average on that, so I figure I’ll do all right on those two. The math worries me a bit because it’s never been a strong subject. What sort of math is on the test? Is there anything in particular I should concentrate on? I do have a practice book, which I’ve been using to review a bit, but I’m curious to hear from anyone who’s actually taken the tests.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Didn’t Praxis blow up, thus instigating peace between the Federation and the Klingon Empire?

Damn you, Eonwe! Making a lame Trek joke was the sole reason I opened this thread and you beat me to it!

…by over an hour!

Man, y’all stealin my thunder…Transmutation was a trip, baby!

Sorry, avabeth. It’s just that you posted a title that could appeal to test takers, ST fans, and Bootsy Collins fans. I had no idea that “Praxis” was a test or a Star Track (said with full intention, cause I love the look on ST fans when people call it “Star Track”) thing.
Yeah. Sorry for the derailing.

I took it around 8 years ago, and I don’t remember the math being anything terribly - maybe to the level of basic algebra or geometry, but that’s it.

Bear in mind though. that I took it 8 years ago and tests can change a lot in that time (heck, since I took the GRE a year ago they’ve added an essay portion). I likely can’t tell you much more than the practice tests do.

Oh, hell. The Trekker in me should have realized I was setting myself up here:smack: .

Lsura, thanks. I’ve got the review books, so I guess I’ll dive into those.

I took it about 7 years ago, and I remember it being tough, but nothing my college classes hadn’t more than prepared me for. I didn’t study for it, just drew on what I’d learned in my classes, and did fairly well on it.

I’m Severely Challenged in math, but made it through with an average score. It’s been so long, though… don’t remember much about it.

'Course, I’m hearing that they’ve changed it a bit in the last few years, so my experience might not be that helpful.

My wife took hers about 2 years ago. If you’re right out of school, and the math is still fresh in your brain, then you should be fine. If you’ve been out a few years, or move to a state with higher requirements, then you may be in for a bit of trouble. I mean, how often do you use quadratic equations in your everyday life?

The reading wasn’t a problem. The grammer part was, because the way we speak in everyday life, isn’t grammatically correct. So that may take some brushing up on. Also, try to score as high as you can, because if you change states, they may have a requirement for a higher combined score. You can take each of the 3 section separatly, and in Virginia at least, you had the choice of either paper tests, or computer tests. My wife had an easier time taking the math paper test, than the computer math test. But some states won’t let you combine the two. You have to do all three sections in either the paper format, or on the computer. Good luck.

Thanks, Atrael. I’m taking it in VA, and I’m pretty sure it’s all computer-based. I’m also not right out of school, so I will definitely be brushing up on the math stuff. The grammar shouldn’t be a problem - I tend to speak and write more grammatically correct than most - habit. I’d really just like to get this over with so that I can get on with my applications.
