I have been “on the net” since the early 90s (yep, even used a lynx browser :D) and with the advent of the GUI browser there was a huge push for me to use bookmarks. However, i rarely use them anymore at all. Now if i want to find somehting i just google it. So, has google replaced, or changed the “bookmark culture” of the late 90s?
No. I use Google to search for things, but I still bookmark webpages I visit on a regular basis.
Same here. But every time I start over, from reinstalling my browser or whatever, I pretty much use Google to build my list of bookmarks.
There are still some things you can’t get with a search engine. Individual message board threads springs to mind. Also sometimes it’s a bit quicker to access a bookmark than to search for it. For instance, I have the weather page for my ZIP code bookmarked. Searching for the weather listings on Google, I’d still have to enter my ZIP code every time I wanted to access it.
[ul] [sup]I’ve got google bookmarked[/sup][sub]& SDMB, too![/sub][/ul]
I bookmark pretty near everything I think I might want to visit again.
Saves time.
I bookmark sites that I visit repeatedly like here and other boards but I also google a lot of sites that I visit only sporadically.
I google stuff that I want to find, then bookmark it. Then I look at the links in the bookmarked page, then probably end up bookmarking them. My favorites is a festering cesspool of junk, and useless pages I rarely visit, but I couldn’t delete them.
The SDMB and Fathom Forums aren’t in my favorites, they are on my AOL Toolbar.
Nah, Sites are still bookmarked but Google has replaced something… it’s replaced just about every other Search Engine.
I actually bookmark Google searches.
I do bookmark things, but I virtually never look at my bookmarks. I usually just re-google things that I want to find again. But I sometimes am looking for some esoteric things, so I often have to try many google searches using different keywords before I find them. So sometimes, I can’t re-google, because I can’t remember what I googled on in the first place. In those cases, I am grateful that I bookmarked it–but it usually takes me forever to find it in the mess that is my bookmark page!
I just type in the addresses of the sites that I visit most.
I don’t bookmark. It’s quicker for me to type (say) boards.straightdope.com than to look for it in a menu.
