Saturday Night Live is notorious for creating unfunny characters and using them over and over again. But ever since Kristin Wiig left and took the Target Lady and Gilly with her I can’t remember any recent examples, other than one or two Weekend Update bits (Drunk Uncle). Has SNL really cut down on these crimes against comedy, or am I blessed with selective amnesia?
I think so. Lately it’s all new unfunny skits.
I think this is because it’s a new, unfunny cast. They haven’t proven their niche yet, so it’s difficult to see what works and what doesn’t.
Cecily Strong and Aidy Bryant still have “Girlfriends Talk Show” and Beck Bennett still does the “Baby Corporate President” skit, so there are some small repeating skits, but I think it’ll take awhile before this cast grows into it’s own.
I LIKE “Drunk Uncle”! My favorite new skit is Jebidiah Atkinson.
I’m glad Cecily Strong reprised her “Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Talked To At A Party” character. So true.
Keenan Thompson’s Al Sharpton is always funny, because it’s so true as well.
ditto Jebediah Atkinson. He enjoys being a pretentious prick.
Which is *seriously *unfunny.
Jebidiah gets upset when the audience “goes full bitch”, though.
I wish he had trashed the “How I Met Your Mother” finale, just for the meta joke.
I forgot about those, but neither annoys me, yet.
Different strokes and all but that bit absolutely kills me each time I’ve seen it. But I’m a huge Bennett fan from his Good Neighbor and AT&T commercial days.
Also, Kyle Mooney is amazing (another Good Neighbor member too).
Made me cackle the first time and chuckle the second. So it’s pretty funny to me, but I probably don’t need any more of it.
Actually looking forward to Stefon and “What’s Up With That?” recurring on tonight’s SNL with Bill Hader getting his debut alumnus host gig.
“Everyone” hated “The Californians”, that seems to be history since Wiig left. So there’s that.
The recurring character parade kicked into overdrive after Wayne’s World because Lorne wanted to make movies and make money off movies. The focus on characters were to make franchises, I think that stream dried up so the impetus is gone.
[Cecily Strong] Awesome. [/Cecily Strong]
