Has something changed with eBay? or maybe my Firewall?

Well, this seems mundane and pointless all right.

I haven’t cruised the 'bay in a bit - the occasional click but no real surfing. I wanted to look for something - but can’t get Category webpages to load. E.g., if I click on Books, I can’t get it to load, let alone clicking on subcategories or doing searches. If I go to My eBay and click on a link to an auction, that auction comes up, but I can’t click on the Category links listed towards the top of that auction page to broaden my search.

Any ideas? Has something changed on eBay recently and I am not compatible in some way? Are they experiencing performance issues? I am on a work PC - could a Firewall parameter have been adjusted by my company that leads to what I am experiencing?

Thanks for any thoughts!

I’m trying to establish an account with ebay, but cant get a confirmation code email from them.

They change stuff all the time on the bay. My wife used to sell a lot, but with recent changes she has backed off somewhat.

Apparently, they are making the results of searchs to fit thier best idea of what you want. Sellers with the highest ratings and other obscure criteria come up first, they are out of order that you are used to seeing and sometimes unrelated to what you are looking for. Its almost like they are trying to force out the little guy, is what my wife figures. Example: She wanted to buy another item she had recently purchased. She typed in the exact title for the auction, and got nothing in the search results. She then went to “My eBay” and found the item number, had to plug it in, then go to “See Sellers other Auctions” for the item to pop up so she could purchase it. Basicly, this guy had an auction out there that was “invisible”.

She is also unhappy with recent changes in fees, feedback ratings and paypal.

eBay has definatly gotten weird lately.

Hmm - this could be very helpful; thanks Gato. I find that I can click on direct links to auctions, too, but that search isn’t working - I wonder if it is because there is something wrong with their new search tailoring or there is an incompatibility between their search tailoring and my firewall? Grr.

If anyone has any more insight on eBay, their changes and whether there are workarounds or best approaches to dealing with it, I am all ears!

I haven’t had any problem logging in.

Sidenote:In the last 2 weeks, I auctioned off 120 songbooks on eBay and after selling almost all of them, eBay and Paypal absconded with about 13% of my money. It was the second time I sold anything there and I don’t think I’d do it again. At least, not in the volume as it was a lot of work.

Also, I’m still waiting on 5 people to pay a week after their auctions ended. Should I re-invoice these folks or what’s the best way to deal with this?

13%?! Whoa.

As for not hearing from people, you need to read up on eBay policy, but you have to offer a certain number of notifications and then I think you can cancel an auction result by following a procedure. I have never had to do it; only read about it a few years ago…best of luck with getting their attention and money before you have to resort to anything like that…

Just politely remind them that their payment is due. If after another few days you hear nothing, follow the “non-paying bidder alert” link.

Yes. I noticed a while back that when I searched Ebay, the page would never load. I don’t know what is causing this, but I have to turn my firewall off to search there. Then, things run smoothly.

When I went to eBay a few days ago, my whole “My eBay” page was different, categories were lost, etc. About the time I decided I was through with eBay forever, I noticed a small “opt out” link, clicked it out of desperation, and all at once my normal page was back and everything worked.

I guess I was part of some testing thing they are doing. If you are having strange, unexpected troubles, you could try looking for an opt out option. It was somewhere in the top right quadrant of the screen, and VERY small.

Hmm - first of all, thanks VERY much for even pointing out the option - very cool. I went and found it, clicked on it and sure enough it went back to the more familiar My eBay page. But the Search facility still blows - when I click on an Auction link I can go to that page, but then when I click on the broader Category of Books at the top of the page it won’t load.

I wonder if I need to check with IT - I don’t like discussing the fact that I am trying to access eBay on my work computer, but I think I can figure out how to smooth that over…
